Puppy fell from my arms about 6 ft on to wood floor! My 14 week old puppy Chipper, who is just over 3 pounds, jumped/fell from my arms about 2 hours ago. As I was fumbling to get ahold of him, he was jumping and I think he fell from about 6 feet in the air on to wood floors! He cried for a minute and lay paralyzed and crooked, and I put my hands on him to calm him. I prayed to God to please let my baby be alright. I gently felt his back and legs for anything obviously broken and he began to relax and straighten his body. Then his front legs were moving and I stood him up but his back legs could not stand. I continued to pray please let him be able to walk. After about 30 seconds he could stand on all fours but wouldn't take steps. I got some treats and he took a few steps for the treat. He appeared to walk normally! I offered more treats and he took a few more steps, then a few more, and I knew he was not broken. I rinsed his bottom off in the sink because he peed when he fell (which made me think he was paralyzed!), then we laid down on the bed. His eyes looked normal. At first he was still shivering and couldn't seem to get comfortable on the bed. I gave him a bit of NurtriCal just to be safe. Finally he seemed to sleep normally and has been asleep for over an hour. Is there anything I should look out for tonight or tomorrow? He hit his little head pretty hard so I want to be sure he doesn't have a headache. Is there anything you can do for a puppy headache? |
Better be safe than sorry, I would take him to the vet to make sure nothing internal is going on. |
Good Grief a baby puppy falling from 6 ft and hitting a wood floor. Well duh, I think this baby needs to see the ER Vet ASAP, he could have internal injuries. |
I would also get him to the vet asap. I wouldn't take the risk with a head/neck or spine injury....or even internal bleeding. |
A situation like this just proves that doing your homework ahead of time in the event of emergencies is a must. I had to take Brutus to the ER vet, and had no idea where the nearest one was. I would recommend that all new puppy owners add the regular vet and ER vet in their quick dials and would even drive to the ER hospital so you know exactly where it is if you need to get there quick. |
Your puppy needs to see the emergency vet RIGHT NOW. He may be concussed, but there are other possible issues also. They may need to check for ainternal bleeding and can palpate everywhere to make sure he isn't in pain. |

OMG please take this baby to the ER asap and have him checked out. My Romeo slipped off the back of the couch which is maybe 32 inches high (he was over a year old) and was yelping like crazy. I was hysterical too because he was in a lot of pain; I dropped everything and rushed him to the vet. After numerous x-rays they found a hairline fracture on a toe. I don't ever think of what could have happened had I let my boy sit around in pain. |
Is this for real??? Can you imagine dropping an infant from 6 feet in the air on a wood floor and not getting it to an emergency room asap??? Seriously...who sells pups to these kinds of people....gggrrrr... |
Mom, I hope you are at the vet with the puppy. Please let us know how everything turns out. Praying that the baby is ok. Hugs... |
I hope your at the ER vet even though the pup seems normal something could be wrong with him |
Hoping if you have not taken your baby to the vet already you are on your way there. Please take this little one to the vet ASAP!! As someone already said, at his age he is the equivalent of a human infant. He needs immediate medical attention. |
Back legs not working for even a minute should be a huge red flag, laying paralyzed and crooked a huge red flag. Any of the things you described would indicate a serious fall and likely a serious injury and would mean an immediate trip to the ER. I don't think the fall could have been six feet though as unless you are 6 feet tall and holding him on your head it would be more like a foot less than you are tall. Not that that makes a difference really in how much he could be hurt. |
Going to sleep after a blow to the head indicates a concussion. You pup needs a vet immediately. |
This baby needs an emergency vet now! If you don't have the money to take him, please borrow it so you can take him to the vet now. It could mean life or death for the little guy! |

Please take your pup to the vet. Hope he is OK. |
No question about what you have to do, take your little baby to the vet for a full checkup for possible neuro, ortho or internal injuries. There could be a fractured vertebra or something that is slowly working its way to a vital area, a brain trauma or so many other similar situations that you cannot afford to do less than have a professional check him out thorougly. |

This is important information to have. |
I certainly can understand how the fall could happen, but can't understand why you posted here instead of heading straight to a Vet for an exam. Good luck. |

I would see an er vet just to be safe |
Yelped..Back legs not working...Hit his head... I must ask if this was your 14 week old infant that had done the same, what would you have done? I don't mean to sound harsh, but stop panicing, posting on here, and get some common sense. You're going to need it with pet ownership. Please take this pup to the vet asap and keep us updated. I pray it's not too late. |
Just checking back for updates. Didn't post before she had excellent advice already. |
This person joined yesterday and this is their first thread and only post:confused: |
Please post an update . Praying that your baby is ok. |
OMG have someofyou guys all lost your minds? Certainly this puppy need to see a vet asap but to be so judgemental and critical of this lady is uncalled for. It would have been enough to recommend she take the puppy to the vet. Hope you never have an accident with your babies and have some self righteous person pointing fingers. I have noticed this before on other posts- come on we can do better. |

My advise was and still is take the puppy to the vet asap and good luck. Please reread my post I was commenting on some the snide replies, see reply #27 for an example. I too recommended she take her baby to the vet. I am hoping for updates also. |

And reply #27, you were judgmental about, was a straight shooter giving a non-sugar-coated response. This is a public forum compromised of many members from many walks of life, around the globe, with various personal experiences and education/knowledge. If you only want responses of those to your liking, maybe stick to asking a friend, not the general public whose responses will be varied and not always what you want to hear. |
