Do you think she weighs around 5-6 pounds? If so, that would be pretty small and would warrant even closer monitoring.

Do you have any Nutrical you can give her occasionally so she doesn't become hypoglycemic from not eating? A little sugar in her water or karo syrup placed under the tongue would help.

Fasting for 24 hours is a usual recommendation for some yorkies, but the tinier yorkies might not do well in that situation.

Do stay away from ham or roast beef. Ham is a no-no for yorkies. Their little pancreas can't handle that fat meat. I would stick to chicken chopped up very fine and if she shows any inclination in eating, you could try feeding it to her using your fingers.

I'm sorry your folks won't take her to the vet. She may be ok, though. Stuff like rawhides are just harder on some little one's than others.

Since she is around six or seven pounds and since it's only been about 12 hours since she ate, I would go ahead and do the fast and try to feed her the chicken and rice about this time tomorrow night, if you cannot take her to your vet. Make sure you let us know how she is doing!!

I totally agree with this - ham is not good for dogs - pork in general is very hard to digest but ham is also very salty also ...

I would def call your vet if she's really acting ill - poor baby she may have had too much of a good thing or there really could be something else wrong - The rice and chicken/hamburger is something lots of people do when their yorkies are sick but if she needs to see the vet - then you should take her in...

Good luck !!!

Make sure you get him some Pedialyte unflavored recommended solution to prevent dehydration due to diarrhea or vomiting. Pedialyte is specially formulated for infants and children to quickly replace lost fluid. Its very good for dogs too. You can get it from most stores in the baby food area. Just pour it in a bowl like you would their water. We use it all the time and its cheap and they seem to bounce right back. Good Luck.

Has she had diahhrea? If so, does it look like it has mucous in it?

Another question. What has her diet consisted of besides the rawhide?

Well, she should absoulutly see a vet. At least try to call your vet to see what you can do. I'm sorry she isn't feeling well. Good luck.

Teaka, I am sorry to hear this news. Any of the digestible chews can cause GI problems some more serious. Any rawhide chews will send my babies into potty mode in short order...Sometimes they even get HGE...your baby does need to be hydrated..use pedialyte with honey or syrup added. I can only hope she is not completely blocked by a piece of that. The fat could cause pancreatitis too.
Please let us know when you see the doc and he disgnoses the problem..I will pray for y'all

my sheltie did that a few times and it lasted for 2 days. she was violently sick throwing up and stuff, breathing funny too. Well, my father had given her some soft canned high fat dog food, and she also had gotten exsposed to some ant poison. my father is good for through ant poison in his cabin on the carpet. well anyway I took my dog to the vet and 400 dollars later, they had me fast her, and they also gave her a shot.her bloodwork said pancrititis. very painful for them. let there little tummy calm down before any solid food. maybe some baby food not turkey kind though. but also some honey in the water and a syringe to keep dehydrated. It will calm down if it is from the food, but a blockage from the raw hides also can be possible. Harleys mommy

I can't believe all the different advise you're getting.

Even feeding her anything might be the exact opposite of what you should be doing (with the exception probably - that she has to have fluids).

If my dog were sick like yours - we would have already gone to the vet. And I would be getting a part-time job or going without other things if that's what I had to do to pay the bill.

I hope that whatever it is resolves itself. That is certainly possible. But, how uncomfortable is she while you are waiting for that to happen?

And - she could have a twisted bowel, a blockage, or something more serious that cannot correct itself. And, in this case sections of the bowel can be going without oxygen and portions of the bowel can die - causing gangrene or other serious complications. The best outcome in this case would be very very expensive surgery or the poor little thing dying because if was neglected. The thing you need to realize is that often early care prevents further complications and in the end can save you hundreds of dollars.

I am hoping the best for your little puppy.

---------- I can understand not going to a vet for minor scrapes and bruises and some non-lifethreatening conditions, but gastrointestinal conditions can be very serious and can certainly be very painful. Your little puppy may be in a great deal of pain. How can she tell you? Whimpering is one way. Doing nothing is another.

I have said it before and will always believe that if people can't afford medical care (or at least enough care to keep their animals free from pain) -- they should not have pets.

Please, for sure, keep us posted. And, again I hope she recovers on her own.

Carol Jean

PS: I re-read some of the posts and think you said that she is going to the bathroom. That is a very good sign. But still - keep a close eye on her and please keep us up to date.

Yes, she sent me a PM and I think she is young and scared for her dog. If her parents are not able to afford to take the dog to the vet, she can't help it and we shouldn't judge. There have been times in the last two years where if we didn't have a credit card, we would not have been able to afford our big vet bills either. I think she is trying the fast and then the chicken and rice which is better than nothing. I hope we haven't made her feel bad or guilty and I hope she post again with an update.

I wish there was a way toset up a fund, funded by Yt members to help out peopel who are in REAL need of help so that these little dogs and their owners don't suffer needlessly. I know I would do anything to get the money for my sick dog but not all people are as fortunate! It would be ahrd to determine who had a real need but everyone hree seems real honest?
