Default Pepto Bismol?

How much pepto should I give Ceeby if any? he weighs about two pounds or a little less. he has not eaten but two bites since yesterday afternoon. We wormed him about two hours ago. he has pooped (watery) once and has vomited his two bites up. he has been almost lifeless all day. I have offered him everything and have had to force Nutrical on him three times already. he won't even lick it off my finger today as usual. His little eyes look so weak. I had to bath him to get the poop off him but I dryed him well with the blow dryer so he wouldn't be cold. Any thoughts on what is going on? My husband says now that he has pooped and vomited he will start eating but that was a long time ago. i have some very small syringes to put something in but don't know what to put unless it's pepto. I have mashed his food up but can't get it in the syringe. I have been very sick today also and I think he is picking up on that. he doesn't want out of my lap. I am going away for the day tomorrow and am scared to leave him unless he eats something for me. Any ideas? Thanks

When Chachi had Diahrea the vet had me give him 3 ccs of keopectate. I would imagine that would be a good amount for the pepto too.

Pedialyte every 2 hours and force it to him. When I had a listless pup, she was very dehydrated. Vet gave her a shot to get fluids in her. Got Science Diet A/D (yes, I know!) mixed that with some water and Nutrical. Had to feed her that every 4 hours. Less than 24 hours later, she was fine.

They can dehydrate VERY fast so keep an eye on him. I do suggest Pedialyte first and for most!

Do you have an emergency vet clinic anywhere around you? I'm a little worried that he might already be dehydrated since he is so listless and his eyes look dull. If you have access to an emergency clinic, I would go right now. I hope you update soon, but I know you are busy with Ceeby...

No emergency vet and my vet is out until Friday. He is drinking some just not eating. However, since I made the original post he has had about one cc of pedialyte and about half of a baby turkey stick. He just feels awful. No more vomiting or poop except the one time each. I am afraid to go to bed. I have been so sick all day and even had a scope at the hospital so I need to rest but i don't want to leave Ceeby. He is in my lap right now. My hubby thought we ought not give him the pepto right now. He got about an inch of Nutracal down about an hour ago and he will have more here in a few minutes. Do you think he will be alright tonight? Should I stay up with him?

Can your husband watch him while you get a little rest? I know it's hard when your not well to take care of a baby but they can fade fast when their so little. Keep us posted and good luck.

Since he has only vomited once and pooped once, I think I will hold off on the pepto. My thinking was that it might settle his stomach and he would eat. i bookmarked that site. Thanks

probably he can. Do you think the nutracal is enough nutrients if he has nothing else?

This is a little late, but I just remembered it. One time when Muffin was sick and wouldn't eat, I had boiled some chicken, but she wouldn't eat that either. So I fed her broth from the chicken from a dropper or syringe. She liked it, too. I could tell it tasted good to her, because the poor little thing was hungry. Some antibiotics that she had been given had really messed up her little tummy or intestines. I don't know which. Anyway, it wasn't long before she was at least able to eat some of the chicken and then back to her regular food.

Also, I think you can get baby food into the syringe. I know many, many years ago I fed baby food with a dropper to my very elderly chihuahua.

Glad to hear that Ceeby is feeling better. Did your vet tell you to worm him or did I misread your post? My vets say never to do those sorts of things when they are not tip top, but that just might be our preference.
Also, I know it is said that they can go without food and water for up to 24 hours when they are sick with a GI problem but I cannot imagine letting these little younguns go that long..so it is a good thing that you forced liquids.
An older vet in the practice says there is a "gut-to-stomach communication" and gut tells tummy NOT to send anything down there cause gut cannot take care of it. That seems to be true--when these younguns get diarrhea they go off their food, too.
Anyhow, sounds like you and hubby did all the right things...try to get rest!

Sometimes forcing food into an upset stomach only compounds the problem. But fluids have to be maintained.

If a person or animal becomes very dehydrated -- giving of water or other fluids cannot correct the problem. Even if the animal drinks a lot of water, when dehydrated, the body just can't absorb enough of it. They need intravenous fluids.

Nevertheless, keep the fluids going. The puppy will certainly be worse off without them. I really wish there was someone you could take your puppy to today. If she doesn't recover, please take her as soon as possible. I know you are worried. Have someone watch her for a while and you take a nap.

the vet has me giving him pedialyte every hour. he said this would keep him from being dehydrated or at least get him thru until morning. He comes in at seven thirty and even tho he is showing signs of being a little better, I am going to take him in for iv's.

Default Pepto & Yorkies

Hi, I have a 6 month old Yorkie mix girl weighs about 3.5lbs. A well-meaning family friend gave her table scraps (roasted turkey and seasoned chicken and cooked vegetables) against my wishes over the holidays ... and you know the rest!

She was listless and had almost liquid poop all day Xmas. She vomited a little also (2x's) towards the end of the night.

I ended up letting her go dry (no food for 12hrs) with only access to fresh water b/c I didn't want her to get dehydrated. The next day (noon) I gave her about a tablespoon each of cooked ground beef and plain boiled rice mixed together. I fed her the same amount every 2-3 hrs until about 10pm. By the end of the day her stools started to firm up.

The following day I fed her about a tablesp of her usual dry kibble (Royal Canin) . There was no bad reaction so I fed her the same amount every 2-3hrs. By the afternoon, she was making soft stools. She is energetic and playful and doesn't seem too bothered by the whole thing.

I didn't use Pepto because I was scared to give the wrong amount. I'm not sure about using it as I think every dog is a little different even within the same breeds. If the rice and beef hadn't worked I was planning to give her some plain yoghurt. If no home remedies worked, then it would have been off to the vet! (Trying to save some money on Dr., but not wanting to put pup's health at risk). Good Luck!!
