| Luxating Patella Took Mikki in for her follow up from spay/yearly vet visit. When she went in for her spay, my vet noticed her knees. The girl at the office did not mention anything to me. Today he did her yearly and she has luxating patellas. He also thinks she is not the age the lady told me. He is approximating her at 3 yrs old. (Not that it matters but don't understand why she lied to me.) She also is going to need her teeth cleaned. He said her buildup was worse than dogs older than her. It was a depressing visit. Any experience you have with the luxating patellas I would love to hear about. Thanks. BTW, Rosie went in for her yearly too. We left with her having a clean bill of health. Thank God.

| Luxating patellas are very common. As long as she is not having issues with them, they should not be a major concern. People who give up dogs lie all of the time. You are lucky that is all that she lied about. I have seen some real messes.

| My little Cricket has LP. Like LJ said, our vet told us it is common in yorkies. Cricket was able to compensate and never had any pain or gait difficulties w the LP. Now as she became an elderly girl, she got arthritis in the knees and hips, which the vet said is common in LP dogs as they age. She was on Glucosamine Chondroitin, and the last year of her life she was on pain meds for the arthritis (she was 13). As a young dog, however, you could not tell she had LP w/o palpating her knees.

| Jada has grade 3 LP in both rear knees. She has never shown any pain or leg lifting when she runs. One of the main things is to limit jumping and control their weight. Our vet put Jada on Dasuquin because she went from a grade 2 to grade 3 in one year. I had let her gain a little too much weight when we first adopted her. Since last year we have gotten almost 12 ounces off of her and it has made a world of difference.

Good advice. Excess weight and jumping are both killers for bad knees!

| The tooth yuckiness is so common in Yorkies. I'd chalk that part up to a normal day at the vet. LP is common too. More than likely won't need to do anything for it. Keep her lean and restrict jumping. Ellie has a nasty LP. Comes out easily and is very crunchy on physical exam. No symptoms at home, so we do nothing for it.

| I am sorry to hear this, but from what the others said it is common. My vet just told me this week that bad teeth are common in Yorkies. He owned a Yorkie, she passed away last month at 13 years old, so he knows the breed well. I would think the lady told you she was younger afraid you wouldn't want her. But Mikki has been blessed with a loving home.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Just wqnted to chime in, mild Lp and sometimes even moderate LP, is often times well managed with weight control, good sensible exercise, and jumping restrictions. I feel like a broken record sometimes, but swimming is the best exercise bar none, for any dog with joint problems, anywhere. With Yorkies it is so easy to provide a swimming and fun environment. A kiddy pool, the bathtub etc. You can look at some joint supplements Talk to your vet about them for joint health.

I noticed she walked a little funny but just didn't make the connection. The vet said it appears to not bother her at all. And I have not noticed any pain either. He did say that it would become more of a problem when she gets older. At this point he did not put her on any meds. He did tell me it was common and a genetic thing.

I do have stairs for our bed. And we do not allow her to jump down from it. She has to use the stairs. The only time she jumps is to get in my chair in the living room. However, now we will just have to pick her up instead.

I guess I was living in my own bubble world again. I just am amazed at people. I would have taken her regardless but wish she would have told me. I really think she would have known about the age. However, I am not sure about the LP. I don't think she was giving Mikki the care she needed so this may have been unknown to her.

| No and the name of the vet clinic she gave me is obviously not around here. If there is even such a clinic.
