| Puppy ate a penny!!! What a day Ive had, followed by the last 2 days. One of our puppies apparently ate a penny a while ago, & starting on Saturday started to have blood in the urine, & eventually by last night was urinating pure/ concentrated blood. Yesterfday morning I took her right away to my vet which they diagnosed her with Urinary Tract Infection... which they said is fairly common in female puppies. Was put on an antibiotic & clavamox... this morning she still hod blood & the vet said that it would only get a tab bit worse before it got better. Then when I got home from work today she was trying to walk & she would fall over, my heart stopped... I took her to banfield knowing they were the ONLY vets open at that time & she all of a sudden threw up & something black came up from the vomit & I was like I dont think she ate an olive, but when i touched it & pulled it out it was hard & when we looked closer it was a penny with a HUGE hole in it. I couldnt believe it. Then finally they gave her fluid & antibiotics & all these diff types of medicines & a Iron high multi vitamin & a/d food. She at one point felt lifeless in my arms & thought I was going to lose her, I never knew how bad one freakin penny could be. googling info I came across this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-ate-coin.html & I was like wow. I want to post my story for 2 reasons, one for prayer & hope that everything gets better from here on out & secondly to teach the importance of this little tiny toxic object... Please owners watch what your dogs put in their mouth, we've been so careful but I guess not careful enough, & this nearly kills her... Thank goodness that Banfield was amazing & helped the way they did. So Doggie owner please watch out for this with your babies. thanks. |

| Dogs can become toxic from pennies because of the zinc in them and they can actually die. Thank you for posting this...it is a good reminder for everyone! Glad that your puppy is ok!

| That is a very scary story. I am glad the puppy is ok. But my gosh, this could have been tragic .

| I hope that your baby recovers fully! Mina is 7months old and a walking vaccumcleaner. I am always walking with my face looking at the floor to pick up thread, pins (I sew),scraps of fabric, leaves from outside, hair from the other dogs, you name it and she will pick it up. Recently on vacation the biggest challenge I had was keeping her from tasting ALL of the rocks that the campground streets were made out of. I think I said "drop it" every 10seconds,unless she was contained in the playpen or in my lap. |

| Thank God your dog is okay. Poor thing has really been through it! I sure hope the next few days are less dramatic and awful for this poor baby and she can start to enjoy her life! I hate/love posts like this because they tell of a suffering dog but also warn us to stay vigilant.

| Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad that it has a happy ending, you must have been so frightened! I love this site, I learn something new everyday... never would have thought that a penny could be toxic.

| Latest update... 1st off thank you all for the well wishes & please continue to pray, we are NOT out of the safe zone, specially what happens about 45 mins ago. We tried to feed her but she didnt want to eat so I force fed her vitamin which the vet said to be aggressive about & about 5 mins later my husband sees her strain herself & falls over & shes whining... I ran to pick her up & her eyes roll back & she stops whining & moving & I think we literally lost her, i ran out the door & was getting in the car when all of a sudden she moves her head & picks it up & drops it into my chest. I kissed her & she looked up at me & I took a deep breath... I was like oooommmgggggg. We put her down on our bed away from her siblings & we realized she also pooped herself... I picked up the phone to the ER vet & they were no help, I think she ended up having a seizure. She is ok now & laying on our bed, she ate a little bit of the a/d & tried to drink some of the pedialyte but prefers straight water. We dont know what happened, everything was fine all day, her urine even went back to normal, pure yellow. Then this... my heart is still in my throat & Im a heck of an emotional roller coaster, so please continue praying & I will be back with an update tomorrow.. I promise! TY |
