| Saliva or urine wet spot? Ernie is 13 years old and weighs in about 10 ponds. Ernie sleeps at the foot of our bed and 3 days ago we woke up to find Ernie lying in a wet spot on the blanket which was as big around as his body. We first thought that he was in such a deep sleep that he lost control and may have urinated. It has happened now three nights in a row. However, we placed Ernie on a white towel in the bed and the "puddle" was not yellow but clear. Ernie spends a lot of tine "cleaning his feet" by licking them and when he lays next to me on the sheet and does this he leaves maybe a 6 inch circle wet spot. Now we're wondering if he is maybe over-salivating and the wet spot we are seeing is actually saliva. We talked to the vet who wants to test his urine as a start to anaylzing this problem and we are bringing a urine sample to the vet today. Anyone ever have a problem like this? |

No Longer a Member | What does it smell like? if it doesn't smell like urine I'd lean more towards saliva, my cat occasionally chews/licks blankets and can leave a pretty large wet spot behind...which is weird because he's a cat, lol. I hope whatever it is it can be easily fixed, or managed. Good luck with the vet. Welcome to YT! |

| My beagle, Benji used to lay on the bed and lick his paws. He would leave a large spot, maybe about a foot. If you can, smell the wet spot. If it's urine, you will know by the smell. Good luck! |

| Hopefully you will find out for sure at your vet today. If the spot is that large, my feeling would be that it is urine, and if it doesn't smell real strong it could be very diluted urine, and needs to be checked by the vet. Sending good thoughts that everything checks out with your baby.

| What did you find out at the vet? My labmix does this sometimes and I have went to his bed to fluff and straighten it out and thought he peed (which he NEVER does) on it because of a very large wet spot but I smelled it and it was not pee but saliva ~ he licks his paws and legs and leaves those spots a lot but he is a healthy dog. I hope you find out what is going on! Let us know how he is doing.

| OK. Had the urine tested (BTW getting a urine sample from a dog who stands so close to the ground is an adventure) and, while it was normal, the vet noticed that it seemed to be diluted with too much plain water so she wanted to do blood tests to insure that the kidneys were functioning properly. The blood work came back and showed that the most important marker (creatine(?) was normal, but another marker was slightly elevated. She suggested some changes to Ernie's diet and felt there is nothing more required. This morning as Ernie came over to lay beside me in bed, I noticed after a while that there was about a 4 inch wet spot by his penis. It appears as though he is "leaking". Has anyone ever had this problem? If so, what can be done about it? We have a call into the vet to provide this additional info. |

| I have never had that problem so I am sorry I can't give you any advice on that. I am glad you got the sample and blood tests taken and it is nothing too serious though. What has the vet said about the "leaking"?

| As Ernie is an older gentleman it could be that just like older people incontinence could be an issue for the little guy. I don't have a little boy but I do know that there is something called a "belly band". This is a soft band that goes around a dogs waist and covers their penis. A sanitary napkin fits inside so that if he has an accident the napkin absorbs the urine. I would ask the vet if it could simply be a part of growing older and if so you may want to buy a couple for him |
