Yes, it was ruled on your Teddy, but things can change very quickly. Teddy likely still does not have any ulceration, but I personally wouldn't risk using corticosteroids.

Oh, God no! I would never give anything to my dog without a prescription! I think that what the previous poster was doing was explaining to me her situation and how easy it was to deal with just to ease my nerves. I don't think she was trying to urge me to give my dog corticosteroids...at least that is not what I took from her post.

Yes, that is true; and many people have old prescriptions laying about.

Again, my goal here was to educate and to warn people of what could happen to a pup if a steroid was applied to an eye that had an ulcer or abrasion.

Please understand, we are not trying to put you on the spot. It's just that unfortunately, a lot of people come on this website looking for advice and self- medicate instead of going to a vet just to save some cash...nothing is being directed at you personally, but LJ and others are simply making sure that all the information is put out there in order to make sure that nobody reads your advice and takes it the wrong way.

Oh my. You are having a bad week! I know, it could be a worse diagnosis, but it makes your skin crawl a bit. Sorry I'm coming onto this thread a bit late, but I saw on another thread you were having a bad week so I went looking to see if you posted about poor Teddy being sick. Hope this diagnosis helps turn things around for poor Teddy (and his mommy)!

I'm so glad you finally have a diagnosis. What is the treatment? I think this is good news that it isn't a permanent condition, like dry eye.

Thank you for caring. Yes, it has been a pretty emotional week...I'm still feeling a bit rattled to be completely honest. Thank you for checking up on me and Teddy I truly appreciate it.

I'm not sure what the treatment is yet. I have to go back to my regular vet because the opthamologist only diagnosed it but doesn't know the exact treatment, prescriptions, etc so I have to go to the vet to pick them up. I just don't know how he got it and still don't fully understand what happened here. I thought dogs get ear mites and not mites around the eyes? I am just baffled by this.

And yes, I'm extremely relieved that it wasn't dry eye.

I found this article that says all dogs have mites, but the mites aren't a problem unless the equilibrium is upset or the immunity to them is compromised. They may be transferable from dog to dog:

I understand the emotional rollercoaster you have been on, and this was a totally unexpected diagnosis, but be happy! It's treatable and Teddy is going to be as perfect as ever.

OMGOODNESS why did they have to put that horrible animated graphic of a mite?! I don't think Teddy will sleep with me tonight!

Poor Teddy...maybe it was because he had conjuctivitis and that made him more suceptible to the mites?

Sorry, I really didn't mean to upset you. Human have little critters on their eyelashes too. You remind me of an episode of Northern Exposure in which the female lead refused to kiss the doctor after he told her about the bugs in human eyelashes.
