| Underweight yorkie Hi guys, A week ago, I got a mistreated yorkie. He's around 8 years old. I have a vet appointment next week, so I'll ask the vet what to do but I'm pretty scared for my baby so I thought I'd ask, in case there's someone here with experience. When I got him he was scared and shaking constantly, but now he's happy and running around and enjoying all the attention. So mentally, I think he'll be okay. My problem is that he's extremely underweight. He's gained a bit of weight since I got him, but I have to hand feed him. He won't eat by himself. How much do they eat a day? I have a St. Bernard, so maybe I'm just used to having a dog that eats like a horse? Also, his coat looks very unhealthy. Are there any supplements I can add to his diet? Help much appreciated. I will ask the vet for help, but any input is welcome |

| Welcome to YT. What are you feeding? Have you tried canned food? About 1/2 cup of kibble for a 6 pound dog (give or take) seems pretty common (split into 2 or 3 meals).

| Hi and thank you I use the brand Brit which I buy from the vet. I'm not a fan of canned food, but I'll give it a try. Thank you 1/2 cup? I should have guessed. There can't be much more in the little bugger I guess I'm just not used to such a small dog Maybe I should just give him time. He IS in a new environment. He'll probably start eating by himself in his own time Thank you for taking the time to reply! |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | A high quality food should help improve his coat over the course of a couple of months. Also, the better the quality of the food, the less they have to eat in order to meet their nutritional requirements. In addition to the hand feeding, you might want to leave food down all day; as he gets more comfortable with you and his new home situation he ma start to eat on his own. I'm glad to hear the little guy seems to be adjusting well with you. Did you get him from a rescue or an individual? What was he eating with them? Some Yorkies are extremely picky eaters and turn up their noses if their diet is changed abruptly. Until you get him checked out, I would avoid giving him snacks to boost his weight since many of the typical dog treats/snacks are high in fat (and can trigger digestive upsets and pancreatitis) as well as being low in nutritional value. That being said, many yorkies like boiled, skinless chicken as a treat. Mine also love low fat cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, plain (unflavored) yogurt and blueberries.

| Hi, I know it's been ages since I posted this thread but life has been very busy. I would like to thank you guys for taking the time reply. So here's an update on my baby He's doing great and is now a cheeky little brat who's captured my heart It's been a long struggle. Last week was our last appointment with the vet. He's now in superb condition He has now normal weight, great muscle mass (which has been hard work gaining). He's lost a lot of his teeth, but we're dealing and his quality of life is good He was dumped on my doorstep. I know the previous owner and she's been arrested for animal cruelty so that's a victory So again, thank you all. I was in panic state at the time but somehow you calmed me down and it made me gain control so I could take action. Thank you! Here's a pic (not a great one :P) |

| That will take a little bit of time.... good nutrition will turn things around. His little body has a lot to recover from.

| How wonderful that he is doing well! His coat will come around with good nutrition. It will just take a while to grow out. Have you taken him for a good grooming to cut all of the unhealthy hair from his coat? This will help tremendously!
