| Need advice, please help! My 7 months old puppy may have licked some rat poison. I really do not think that he did, but I am worried. I was at my friend's garage sale, and he was sniffing the corner, where she told me they had some rat poison, which as been removed and swept. Now I am worried. It has been 2 days, and he seems just fine. I still gave him some charcoal pills mixed with food to clear up his stomach. But I read that the symptoms would not show up for maybe weeks. |

| Call a vet immediately. If it was a product like Decon, those work by destroying an animals ability for blood to clot.... and they bleed to death internally. By the time you see symptoms, it likely will be too late.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Rat poison isn't something to fool around with. If you have any reason to suspect he may have gotten in to it, then he needs to be seen by the vet ASAP. They will start him on Vitamin K (by injection) to help prevent bleeding and he will need to continue on the medication (by mouth) for a few weeks. Charcoal is useless on rat poison.

| Thank you for all the thoughts and advice. i gave him charcoal because I called the vet and was told to do so to clear up his stomach, then I myself started him on Vitamin K1 per vet.'s advice. I ended up still taking him to the vet on Monday (this happened Saturday), and he did not give him an injection. He did the exam, told me that I was doing all the right things and sent me on my way.... I was a little disappointed but reassured, I guess. He is just taking Vitamin K now. Here is my question: the vet said to give him up to 10-20 mg a day. That seems like a very high dosage. My mom is a holistic doctor, and she says that such a large dose of K1 could be harmful for him. Do you guys know anything about the dosage? he is about 7 pounds. Should I seek second opinion? He seems fine. I honestly do not think he actually got any of the poison. But I have always been a worrier. |

| If my pup supposedly ate rat poison and I called my vet and she told me to give him activated charcoal (never heard of this btw) and Vit K without SEEING him/her, I would never step foot in her office again. I think you need another VET opinion.

| I would think blood tests would need to be done to check bleeding times (coagulation of the blood). Rat poison if injested causes abnormality in bleeding times. Incidentally, warfarin (rat poison) is what we give humans (Coumadin) as a blood thinner. I am not sure of the dosage of vitamin K for a small dog. I would be watching for signs of bleeding - bleeding gums, blood in stool or urine.

| I would have to agree, I would expect the vet to do some type of blood test prior to saying things were okay...please get a second opinion.

| No signs of any bleeding. Got a second opinion. The other vet did not do a blood test either, but he thinks that he did not eat it either. Got a prescription of vitamin K1 for a month 25 mg. Vet said it would not hurt him even if he did not eat/lick any. I am still worried because that is a high dosage of blood thickening drug. Appears happy, healthy, playful otherwise. |
