My girls ate xylitol-I cannot stop crying Today I made a bbq and used sugarfree maple syrup as part of a marinade. Did not remember to check to see what the sweetner was before I gave them a few tiny pieces of meat each. It was xylitol. I was so hysterical I immediately took them to the ER. They are there now. Cassie is 2.5 lbs and Muffin is 4lbs. Muffin threw up the some meat but Cassie did not throw up any meat. I gave the them center of the meat not the crust where most of the marinade was, maybe 4 or 5 tiny pieces each. I cannot stop crying. I keep thinking I killed my girls. They will not know for 48 hours if they are in liver failure. They say there is nothing that can be done if they are in liver failure. I am sick to my soul. Please Pray for Cassie and Muffin. I have thrown out every product with artificial sweetner in the house. How could I have done this to my own sweet babies? I am inconsolable. |
I'm praying for your babies. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I did not know artificial sweeteners were that bad for dogs. Hopefully when I check this site again, there will be good news. |
I am so sorry you are going through this right now. I am praying that Cassie and Muffin will be ok. It is good that you got them into the ER right away. Keep us updated. |
Are they throwing up or diarhea? Any seizures? What makes you think they are in Liver failure? Well, you did the right thing by taking them to the ER. I hope everything works out. |
Sending prayers for Cassie & Muffin :hands: I'll check back to see how they are doing. Hugs ))) to you, I know how difficult this must be for you. Positive thoughts to you, they will be ok. |
I am so sorry that this happened. We all have made errors with our babies but you acted so quickly, I am praying that all will be well. God bless you ... you are a good Mom. |
I called. Muffin's sugar is stable. Cassie's is dropping to 78. I am terrified. |
My thoughts and prayers go out to you!! Please update us when you can |
Oh my, I will be praying for your little ones! I didn't know anything about artificial sweeteners and yorkies. It is a good thing you knew about it and got them to the vet right away. Please let us know how they are doing. We will keep praying.:( |
My heart is breaking for you, and I'm praying that they come through this unharmed. You're a great mom for getting your babies the care that they need so quickly. |
I hope it is nothing too serious and they areb ack with you |
Prayers for Cassie and Muffin. I did not know artificial sweeteners are bad. Hugs. |
I am thinking it would be unusual for them to have ingested enough xylitol just from a sugar-free maple syrup based marinade to give them either hypoglycemia or liver failure. You would see the signs of hypoglycemia. Is the ER vet giving them dextrose? That will counteract any hypoglycemic episode -- but not sure if they would administer that without seeing symptoms and one of them spitting up a little meat is really not enough of a symptom. I have read that .5 g of xylitol can cause liver failure. That is more than what's in one stick of gum. So, I think to reassure yourself, you might want to figure out how much they might have consumed. How much was in the amount of syrup you used for the marinade? How much of the marinade did not absorb with the meat? Probablya lot left over right? So, I am thinking there was probably very little actually on the meat itself. Now, how much meat did they eat? Probably a tiny percentage of the total, right? I am trying to help you feel better about this because the likelihood that their little pieces of meat really had enough xylitol in them to hurt them is minimal at best. I think you are going to find your babies are just fine! I would never intentionally give them anything with xylitol but in the case where they ingest a tiny amount of meat that might have absorbed a little marinade -- I doubt you have any worries. I commend you for taking them in to make sure! But pls don't beat yourself up too much. I feel pretty sure they will be just fine! |
Oh no! Thankfully you got them to ER quickly. Sending Cassie & Muffin best wishes for a complete recovery. |
How did you know that about the sweetner? I would never have known. HUGE prayers for your furkids and you.   |
I am keeping your girls in my prayers for a complete recovery. |
Oh my gosh, I am praying with tears that your babies will be recover quickly. |
I can sympathize with you. MY pup got a hold of one of my mom's blood pressure pills and I was at work when she called me about it. She rushed the pup to the ER and he came out just fine. I'll pray that your little ones come out the same. |

"Normal blood sugar values for a dog run between 65- 110 mg/dl, but can be a little higher if the dog is stressed, excited, or shortly after eating. The glucometers that you use at home do tend to provide readings that are lower than the actual blood glucose level. But in your case, this is actually beneficial. Since your are monitoring for low blood sugar as a result of a history of insulinoma, this will hopefully catch your dog before his levels go too far down. If his readings are in the 65- 70 range, feed him- preferably something dense in carbohydrates, and then re-check 1/2- 1 hour later. If it is below 65, feed him and run him into your vet for a blood glucose on the Chemistry analyzer and possibly some dextrose intravenously. Read more: Pet Questions - canine blood sugar levels - JustAnswer http://www.justanswer.com/pet/084zs-canine-blood-sugar-levels.html#ixzz1KdVWjIIK" This was answered online by a vet. I am very curious -- is this vet's office saying that 78 is something to be distressed about? I am not understanding at all. It seems like they should be reassuring you at this point, not trying to panic you. |
On the last page of this article it recommends to give IV glucose and a liver protectant.... I would call and make sure this is being done.... http://www2.aspca.org/site/DocServer...df?docID=10462 Keeping your babies in my prayers... |

I wanted to make sure on the reference I listed before and investigated some more. Found several listing the same and also some listing normal fasting glucose level for dogs to be between 75 and 120 mg per deciliter. So your dog is still within the norm and probably in the fasting time period now if they have not been fed since the ingestion of the tiny pieces of meat. Also thought about what you said about the meat -- you took the pieces from inside and not from the outer layer which had the BBQ sauce on it. I really don't thnk you have anything to worry about. Are they keeping them for 24 hours or 72 hours? Sometimes they keep them for just 24 hours and then you bring them back periodically up to 72 hours for more glucose & liver function testing. Pls let us know what you find out. |
Prayers for your little ones; that they will have no ill effects. |
Thank you all so much for your love and concern, and for keeping my mind busy while I have to wait the 48 hours to see if they will survive. I have been up most of the night off and on. My mind is ragged, but I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions. Thank you all so so much. They say Cassie is vomiting now, not from inducing the vomiting as they did before, but they think it is because they are feeding her so frequently. They will do the first liver panel tonight at 8PM. Please please all, continue to pray for my tiny babies. Blessings to you all. FIDebra, thank you for your concern and your response. The girls are getting dextrose and liver support through an IV. Yes, one would think that they would have ingested so little that it would not harm them. But it goes according to weight of the dog to the amount ingested. As Cassie and Muffin, but especially Cassie are so tiny, a very little bit can be fatal. That is how poisonous Xylitol is. And yes, they were giving without symptoms. They say Cassies blood sugar has gone up a bit to 95 where the doctor says she is more comfortable. After they induced vomiting Cassie did not vomit up any meat, but Muffin did. Cassie is eating now but Muffin isn't. Quote:

Thanks for letting us know how the girls are doing. We will keep them in our prayers - especially for these 8 pm blood tests. I am sure you are mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted, but you are such a good mommie getting these girls the care they need right away! Please keep in touch - we will by praying and waiting with you! |
The ER said that in spite of the fact that Cassie was eating consistantly and was getting IV dextrose, her sugar kept going down to 78. Now it is up to 95. I think the Doc. was concerned because Cassie is so tiny and she was eating and getting IV dextrose and with all that her sugars were dropping. Cassie or Muffin never threw up on their own, they were induced by medication from the Clinic when I first brought them in. But now Cassie is throwing up a little bit on her own. They are hoping it is because she is being fed so much. she has a tiny tiny stomach. Quote:

I am praying they both make a full and speedy recovery and are back in your arms soon. I banned gum from my house when I found out on here that it can be lethal to our babies. I never thought to look what else it is in. |

dogs can get into them. I myself forgot to check the label of the maple syrup, only after they ate did I realize I need to check the label. And then my nightmare began. All Yorkie lovers, take heed, if you use artificial sweetners. Much love, Shellie |
