| Worried My neighbor got Buster.a pig.ear. We gave it to.him and he loved it. He did not eat the whole thing... just the (for lack of a better word) crunchy outside and then my bf threw it away. A little while after eating that he puked twice and has diarrea. He still seems himself.. just a little restless... like he'll lay down for a min and then get up and lay somewhere else... like he cant get comfortable?? He ate and.drank a bit after puking and having diarrea so i dont know what to think?? Could it just be an upset tummy?. Im just a little scared that it could be.something more serious... any.advice would be.great!!

| I don't have any experience with pig ears, but just wanted to say I hope he feels better soon. If he gets a lot worse you could take him to an ER vet....but if not then you could have your vet check on him tomorrow. Please update when you can on how he is doing.

| Pooping is good, but because it happened not long after eating it, an obstruction is still possible. Anytime they vomit after a chew is a concern. With him not being able to get comfortable, I'd be quite worried. It is probably just an upset stomach (or you could even be looking at pancreatitis), but I would be watching out for an obstruction. When you press lightly on his abdomen (in between his ribs), is it painful? If he continues to act this way and you are concerned, the ER may not be a bad idea.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | it could just be an upset stomach or it could be pancreatitis. pig ears are very fatty and some small dogs cannot handle them. my yorkie had a slight case of pancreatitis a few weeks ago (cause unknown) and she seemed restless and uncomfortable. would lie down in one spot for a few minutes then get up and change positions or locations. she kept throwing up all night (or attempting to throw up after everything was out of her stomach). I took her to the vet in the morning and she was put on fluids, and got some metronidazole to go home with later that day. vet also did an in house pancreatitis test to see if that's what was going on.

| I think I've heard pigs ears could have salmonella. I would call my Vet in the morning, unless he continues or gets worse. |

| I would definitely be concerned if the vomiting and diarrhea continue and take him to an emergency clinic. Hopefully it will not come to that. Please keep us posted.

| I've never read anything good about pigs ears. I copied this link for you: Pigs' Ears Not Recommended for Dogs Pigs' ears have a high fat content and can lead to obesity. They can also cause stomach upset in some dogs. Because they are high in fat, they can irritate the pancreas, causing pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. This results in vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pig's ear treats can also be a source of Salmonella bacteria. The federal government recently issued a warning that pig's ear dog treats from a number of manufacturers were contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and other serious long-term complications. Some pets that become infected may not show clinical signs. These products can also be a risk to humans, according to the Health Canada warning. Transmission of the bacteria to humans can be via direct handling of contaminated product or handling of pets who may have become infected. For this reason, owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after handling pig's ear treats. Better yet, consult your veterinarian about these products or avoid them altogether. Pigs' Ears Not Recommended for Dogs Please let us know how he is doing.

| Thank you Thank you everyone for your concern and help, YT is a great place to go when you're panicking on a Sunday night! Sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner. Buster seems to be doing ok. I did lay him on his back and pressed on his belly between his ribs and pretty much all over just to see if there was any pain. He showed no signs of pain at all... actually seemed like he liked me pressing on his belly. He was eating and drinking a little bit which made me feel better and he did not have any more vomitting/diarrhea episodes. We called the Vet and he wants him on a bland diet for a few days and he wants us to bring in the first firm stool so he can test it. He hasn't pooped since the diarrhea last night so hopefully we get that first firm stool today. I'm really thinking we got lucky and that this is just the Pig Ear not agreeing with his belly. One thing that is for sure is Buster will NEVER get another Pigs Ear. This was super scary... If anyone ever asks me about Pig Ears for their dog my answer will be NO NO NO!
