Little Basil had Surgery this afternoon

Oh no!!!! Thank God Basil has you two!!! When the E Vet set Bijou's leg and casted it they said it looked like it'd heal perfect too, but she cried all night long so we went to our vet the next morning and she took a couple x-rays and said she needed to send us to the orthopedic surgeon's office because it was on a growth plate. Needless to say Bijou went into surgery that day too. Hers was the back leg so we had to keep her from trying to stand up on just the two back legs (like they do when they want picked up) it was the longest month of my life, but so worth it because she's 100% on that leg now and you'd never know it happened. Hope that helps you with all the "tough love" your going to have to give him over the next month. So glad he has you for his daddy!!!

I don't understand why vets do those things. I had two vets tell me that there is a 10% chance of healing with a splint on those tiny bones. That was in reference to our foster, Buffy, who had her ulna and radius fractured for two months. The vet her owner went to just kept changing the splint. Then suddenly one day he said she needed surgery and wanted to do a procedure that also would not have worked on Buffy's leg. Just criminal in my book. She is healing from her surgery that we had done at the specialist...by the time he saw her not only did she need a plate and screws, but also bone grafting.

Thank God you followed your instincts, Steve! Little Basil is going to be just fine!

Basil is wide awake now. He was quiet most of the day yesterday, but perked up at night, naturally as soon as Marge left the house to go and visit her parents. Basil made sure to keep me busy by wanting food, to go out, to play, to bite my nose, and to do his best not TO GET COMFORTABLE with me on the floor. He does not seem to be in any pain, but we have pain meds just in case. The more Pain med, the less he eats...then again, if he is in pain, he will not eat. So far, he is eating and smiling! He gets his antibiotic though daily and a little Pain med to take ther edge off, but not a full does, and the Surgeon is fine with that. Yes, going to be a real long month.

Tomorrow I take carlo in to his specialist, at the ShodanUSMC Internal Medicine Wing. Hope all is well with him. Can only deal with one crisis at a time at my age. Good thing the oldest dog Maxine is like a Timex, she just keeps ticking.

Pain meds are usually dispensed for pain the first couple of days.....however, if a vet wants to keep a dog immobile as much as possible....they want you to continue the pain med......
