One of the worst days of my life
 

Call this morning that Marge's parents home was broken into. They were handcuffed, and thrown around. The 2 crooks got nothing. Marge and I were there after the police called. They are ok, but her Dad has a lot of cuts on his wrists from the handcuffs and is sore.

Since we left the dogs alone, I felt guilty tonight as we went to visit her parents at her sisters house and said lets bring Basil and Maxine. To make a long story short, My Brother in Law picked Basil up and Basil jumped out of his arms breaking his right front leg between the elbow and angle. No growth plate was damaged. Marge is still at the Hospital as they are going to cast the leg for a month. I had to drop off Maxine and let Carlo out, and will be heading back to get them soon. The Vet specialist said in 6 months we will not know what leg was broken. He should make a full recovery. While I want to beat the hell out of my Brother in Law, I realize that accidents happen, but I blame myself for taking them. I also blame the damn b urglers that abuse 86 year old people for this too as we would be home tonight with the dogs. I think I am done with any new dogs. Carlo is old and ill, Maxine is old, and now little Basil is hurt, besides in laws almost dying. They tried to taser my Father in law 3 times but it did not work He has prong marks in his neck. Maybe I am just getting old. We will make sure Basil has the best, but no more little dogs, no more dogs after this. I will not be spending much time here anymore, I am just not feeling like it. I wish you all the best.

I am so sorry for all the stress you are experiencing right now. Were the burglars caught? Please don't blame yourself for taking your little ones with you. I bet your BIL feels bad about Basil. I hope you will come back soon and let us all know how Carlos is doing and how Basil is getting along, AND how little Maxine is doing. I enjoy reading your posts about them. Take care.

Oh my goodness, I'm so shocked I can't believe this, what a horrible thing to have happened. I'm so sorry for you family now, how can anyone be so cruel to tie up a couple and use a taser on them, and for what? What could be worth doing this? People can be so greedy and heartless; it's just so hard to fathom though. I know you must be so angry, it's horrible to feel like you couldn't protect those you love.

I'm so glad no one was permanently injured, and I hope your mother and father-in-law make a full recovery. I'm also glad that little Basil will make a recovery from this. Joey's breeder told us that this is one of the most common injuries, and she had us each practice holding Joey while also holding his front paw. If you are holding the front paw, they won't jump from your arms. Even knowing this, he had a couple of spills. You're brother-in-law must feel pretty bad about this, and I'm praying for your family. Keep your chin up Steve, sometimes stuff happens to good people, and maybe there were more angels helping then you can imagine, it could have been much worse, and I'm so glad the taser didn't work.

Steve, sending prayers for your little Basil and your whole family. How awful. Your wife's poor parents!

Steve, I'm so shocked at so many bad things happening all at the same time. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and hope for the best for your wife's parents and little Basil. When bad things happen to good people, it seems to happen all at once. You are a wonderful family and little Basil wouldn't trade you for the world.

I'm so sorry to be reading this Steve. Believe it or not, those bastards are not the only ones who think beating up an elderly man is acceptable. When I was in middle school my house was burglarized. My grandparents and my aunt went into the house in the middle of it, thought the car out in the driveway belonged to a friend or someone. They went in the house and they saw my gpa who at the time was near 90 and started beating him. My aunt froze in fear, and it wasn't till my gma told them hold old he really was that they actually stopped. Send him to the hospital for a few days, they took a bunch of stuff from the house, and were never caught.

I really hope your family makes a full recovery. I really don't know what else to say. Sometimes life just isn't fair. :(

Steve....sounds like things are overwhelming right now. It is hard to make any sense of what happened to your inlaws other than to say that there is evil in this world. Thankfully they will make a full physical recovery, although the emotional healing may be some time in coming.

Basil vet said he will be fine....and understand that accidents happen no matter how careful we are. You heart was in the right place bringing Basil and Maxine with you. I am so happy he will make a full recovery.....he will be up and running very soon. Enjoy the extra cuddle time you will have with him now...it sounds like you could use it too.

I know we haven't formerly met, but I've so enjoyed reading your posts. I'm sure as a marine (my son is one, too) you've seen your fair share of heart ache. It's so different when it happens to a family member! Then to have your little baby, Basil hurt while you were trying to be two places at once!

OMG Steve where did this happen! Who would be so evil to do something like that to elderly people. :mad: I'm glad that everyone is alright and you and Marge were able be there quickly to help. Did they catch whoever did this to them? That is just disgusting.


My mom is alone during the day while my sister and BIL work and I always worry about her as well. Then again they have 2 Dobermans to keep watch over Mom.

As for Basil accidents happen. :( My sister's Doberman puppy broke a leg not that long ago too. She went to get up and got it caught in the foot board of the bed. It was about a year ago and she is totally fine now recovering well. You and Marge take excellent care of your dogs and Basil will recover well. I'm sure your BIL feels horrible and didn't mean for this to happen. Try not to be too angry at him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, both two and four legged. Don't feel bad about wanting to take your pups with you. I would have done the same thing and I think a lot of people would, thinking it would be the best way to know they were safe. I never like to leave mine home alone.

I'll be praying for a fast recovery for everyone and hope you change your mind and come back..

I am so sorry Steve, hugs to your entire family! I know Basil will be just fine, try not to be too upset over him breaking a leg. He's a healthy puppy and this will be nothing to him in a short amount of time. I am much more worried though about Marge's parents, how horribly scary for them. Bless their hearts♥

Hopefully either the police will catch these thugs or they will OD on the drugs they obviously are using. No mercy for those that abuse elderly people, children or dogs!

OMG Steve I'm so sorry about your parents and about little Basil.
To make you feel any better, if that is possible, my little Daisy was about 12 weeks old when she fell off the couch and landed the wrong way, breaking a front leg. We had to do the same - cast the leg - and her cast was changed every 2 weeks to accommodate her growing leg. We felt the same way - just horrible - but thankfully she healed perfectly and there was even a little comedy along the way when she used the cast against Barney and clobbered him with it.

Keeping you guys in my thoughts.

Oh Steve, I am so sorry for your family and lil' Basil but, you can't beat yourself up over these kind of things! You set out with the best intentions and accidents happen. They could happen to any of us...and have!

My parents who are in their late 80's & early 90's were victims of a home invasion last year but, thank God did not meet the fate that poor Marge's parents did. I am thankful that your dear inlaws survived their attack and have a wonderful son-in-law to help them heal!

Basil will heal and like your Vet said...he will recover! You are a very good pet owner and I can't imagine Basil being in better hands than yours. :)

I am so sorry this happened and hope those thugs who broke in and and hurt your inlaws. How people can do some of the things they do because they are greedy and won't work defies understanding, especially when they pick the weakest, most defenseless to prey upon. It is if they have no soul. It is great that they got absolutely nothing! I'll bet those poor people are scared to death still. I hope somehow the police catch them.

Little Basil will be okay! I'm so glad he didn't have to have surgery.

One day you will feel better as your posts sound like you are a happy, laid back kinda guy who has a loving heart, cares about animal welfare and knows how to make people laugh - which is invaluable. Please feel better about all this soon and please don't go away for long.

Steve I am so sorry to hear how Marge's parents were subjected to such brutality by cowardly thugs. It really is shocking how heartless some people are especially towards the elderly. I am praying they recover quickly and are not haunted by the incident. I hope the thugs are caught and are punished severely. I am sure your brother in law was also shaken by the events so his mind was overwhelmed and a terrible accident happened. Basil will recover in time. I am so sorry life has piled so much on your plate. Please do not them let steal you from YT that would be a great loss. Sending best wishes to you and your family. Steve, I am shocked and saddened at all the terrible things you have had to deal with today.

Damn anyone that would hurt your in-laws! That is horrific. And poor little Basil, your newest pride and joy getting hurt is really a low blow.

You sound overwhelmed, as anyone would be in your shoes, and I just want to say hang in there buddy, this too shall pass.

As much as the world sometimes tries to beat it out of us, the genuine humanity of good people is something that doesn't die easily. I see it in how you rushed to comfort your inlaws, I see it in how you took care of Basil and didn't go postal on the brother-in-law, and I see it in how you let us share in your anger and grief and updated us with a picture of the sweet pup whose back you had in a crisis.

YT needs you, Steve. Take all the time you need but know there's always a place for your caring nature, your wit and your wisdom.

While I haven't ever met you in person, I sure have enjoyed reading your many wise and helpful posts. Your perspective, humor and guidance are invaluable.
I am so very sorry that such a terrible crime happened, and that your in-laws were hurt and scared so badly. My heart and prayers go out to them.
Poor little Basil. He looks like he's one exhausted little trooper laying there with his purple cast. It sounds like he will heal, and is so young I bet he will be the only one to bounce back quickly from this horrible day. He will have your love and care and will also be a comfort to you and your wife, I'm sure.
I hope today is a new day, and that life treats you well. I hope all things good find you, and remind you of all the good in the world, and this horrible, horrible day starts to fade. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My parents seem to be about the same age as your inlaws. I just cannot imagine something like that happening... mine are so fragile. So glad they have you both to look out for them. Sending prayers and hugs about this whole terrible situation.
