Since we left the dogs alone, I felt guilty tonight as we went to visit her parents at her sisters house and said lets bring Basil and Maxine. To make a long story short, My Brother in Law picked Basil up and Basil jumped out of his arms breaking his right front leg between the elbow and angle. No growth plate was damaged. Marge is still at the Hospital as they are going to cast the leg for a month. I had to drop off Maxine and let Carlo out, and will be heading back to get them soon. The Vet specialist said in 6 months we will not know what leg was broken. He should make a full recovery. While I want to beat the hell out of my Brother in Law, I realize that accidents happen, but I blame myself for taking them. I also blame the damn b urglers that abuse 86 year old people for this too as we would be home tonight with the dogs. I think I am done with any new dogs. Carlo is old and ill, Maxine is old, and now little Basil is hurt, besides in laws almost dying. They tried to taser my Father in law 3 times but it did not work He has prong marks in his neck. Maybe I am just getting old. We will make sure Basil has the best, but no more little dogs, no more dogs after this. I will not be spending much time here anymore, I am just not feeling like it. I wish you all the best.

OMG!!!!!!!!! What the H*** is wrong with people:mad: Just glad everything is ok.

He can get more comfortable in there. Sleeping with Maxine is bad enough. Got up at 3 am for a head call, and she laid on 1/2 of my pillow. We have a King Bed, and I had all of 14" last night to lay on. Maxine and Marge were comfortable!

 sounds like our house..in a way.. dh has half the bed, me and three dogs the other half. I don't sleep so well some nights:eek:

How is everything going Steve? Hope thing are getting back to normal...:)

EsmeeKimme 03-30-2011 03:03 AM

Just found your thread. So sorry to hear what happened to your in laws, I am glad they are as ok as they are considering what happened. Also wish little Basil a speedy recovery.

lexi43 03-30-2011 07:01 AM

Hi Steve I hope things are easing up for you. Sending good thoughts and prayer for your in laws and for little Basil.

shodanusmc 03-30-2011 09:17 AM

All are on the long road to recovery. In-Laws seem to be doing a bit better emotionally and physically. Basil is getting around fine, but he hates being confined and limited, and he is not afraid to let you know it. Still no word from the police if they caught the 2 guys. if and when they do, I wish they would call me and give me some time with them to administer some old fashioned Marine Corps justice.

Mardelin 03-30-2011 09:26 AM

It's bad enough when the criminally minded commit crimes, but when they are comitted against the eldery....that just horrific.

Glad the family is on the mend....

kjc 03-30-2011 02:00 PM

Glad to hear everyone is doing better... it does take time.

I would also suggest an alarm company, like ADT who does monitoring. The units come with many tricks and programs... like you set it to get a response from you at any given time, if there is no response, a silent alarm will sound and the company calls the house. If you do not answer, police are sent. If you answer, and forget your password, police are sent, if you give the wrong password intentionally, police are sent.

The operators are extremely discrete. "Do you need help?" No we're fine (lie). "Okay, just to verify, what is your password?" Bugs (another lie)."Okay, thank you and have a good evening." They call the police to respond silently to the address.

If you can get to the unit, there's a few ways to sound a silent alarm... like keying in the wrong code to turn the unit on or off. The alarm does not sound in the house, only at the police or monitoring station.

Some come with a battery operated remote that you can carry with you. And the fees are extremely reasonable...

At the very least, get the yard signs that warn a system is installed. One never knows, and most crooks will avoid alarm monitored homes.

Just some food for thought.... we got one to keep the teenagers in the house at night  (door and window alarms), and alarmed our sheds too due to the thieves in the area. It does help one sleep better and feel to safe. Plus you can check the status of all doors and windows from the unit, instead of running through the house all the time, to check and double check the locks.

There's also cameras you can get and set up to view online, so you could actually see the views of their house (inside and out) from your own computer to check on them.... I have 3, one is always set up to view from my front door out to the street (I can see the Mailman or UPS and their trucks from my TV or my computer.) Some doggy day cares have these cameras installed and allow the owners to log on and see what their dogs are doing all day long!

Can you tell I suffered a break-in at one time? It is unnerving to say the least.

Hugs to you and your people and pups!

We've had ADT ever since we moved to Phx. Someone tried to break in our house at 2:00 in the afternoon one day. They broke a window, but nothing was taken - the cops think he/she heard the alarm going off and ran away. We do get some peace of mind w/ having a system.

All valid points, and it was discussed with them, but the greatest security system in the world will not protect you when you let the bad guys into the house. I also suggested Life alert for them, and that we would even pay.

We have the alrm on every window, door, siren, lights, glass breakage, etc. A 135 pound personal rotection trained Dog (old, but still can pack a punch), as well as a Taurus Judge with 410 00 buck near the bed, and a 12 gauge with 000 buck on the first floor. Then again, if we let them in, why bother with all of the other precautions. They are still real nervous.

Basil however, is feeling good, and hating limited mobility by a lot of X-Pen time.

Thanks Ann. Glad nothing was taken from your house. Glad you had the alarm set. Any idea how many people have alarms and do not bother to turn it on when they leave, or when they are home?

We were told most will leave when an alarm sounds. This is because they don't want to get caught. And it really isn't that expensive at all. Well worth it in the long run. We keep ours on at night even when we are home.

After we were broke into we went over board. The security people asked me what I wanted. I told them I want it to be as secure as Fort Knox. Lol. We have alarms on everything and motion detectors. And a 150 lb Great Pyranees. I always tell people not to try to scare me because my new friend is Smith and Wesson. ;)

As far as letting people in, I think we all try to think the best of people and put our guard down. Unfortunately, we just can't do that any more.

So, glad Basil is feeling better!! He will be up and running before long. :)

shodanusmc 03-31-2011 12:58 PM

Little man Basil is having a good day. Playing with his toys in his Pen, eating well, and barking to let me know it is time for him to go outside. He slept well last night, and work me up this morning at 0700 to go out and eat. Tomorrow Basil goes to the Vet to have his cast and leg looked at.

Marge returns tonight from her trip, and can't wait. It sure does run a lot smoother here when sshe is around. We will visit her parents tomorrow evening. They are doing better, but still scared. Nothing will change that.

BonBon 03-31-2011 01:20 PM

I'm so glad to hear Basil is doing well. I'll be thinking of him tomorrow during his vet visit.

MauiGirl 03-31-2011 02:00 PM

Steve, this weekend is certainly going to be better than the last. Hope Basil is healing up nicely, and that life will feel more like normal for all of you soon.

Bitsy 03-31-2011 02:55 PM

Hope things go well at the vet tomorrow. So glad he is doing well!

yorkietalkjilly 03-31-2011 03:10 PM

Glad things are better.

Perrella 03-31-2011 03:20 PM

Good to hear things are going some better. Sending prayers and positive thoughts for Basil's checkup tomorrow.

Sending healing prayers and thoughts of comfort to your in-laws.

yorkieusa 03-31-2011 04:46 PM

Little Basil sounds like he's making do with his cast. He's playing and still enjoying life, even though it is in a smaller world. I hope he has a good report from the vet. I'm sure you're going to be thrilled to have Marge home.:) I hope her parents continue to do better everyday.

DvlshAngel985 03-31-2011 08:27 PM

I feel bad. Those people did more than ransack your inlaw's house. They took their away their felling of security in their own home.

I agree, and that is why I should be elected the nations Chief Jailer Officer. I would immediately close down 90% of the jails in this country. There would be no long term prisioners. Those conviced of serious crimes would not even have time to be issued prision garb. I will not go into detail here as to not offend anyone. Imagine the money spent on each prisioner each year, that we pay for. Yes, I would offer a real deterent and wake up call to those coaught after they see how I would operate. Damn the ACLU and full speed ahead. Justice with a price.

shodanusmc 04-01-2011 08:32 AM

Leaving for the vet now! Wish the little guy luck! He is feisty today, and when Marge picked up Maxine, he went ballistic. No Jealousy here!

Buster Brown 04-01-2011 08:40 AM

Hoping Basil does great at his checkup! I am glad Marge is home to keep the troop in line. Best wishes to her parents for peace of mind.

MauiGirl 04-01-2011 08:53 AM

Good luck sweet lil Basil!

Hope the whole family has a happy relaxing weekend (oh and try to stay warm).

ladyjane 04-01-2011 02:01 PM

Steve, I have to agree with you about our system. I swear we are way too lenient on criminals. It is bothersome. Many come out of jail and commit a crime just so they can go back....beats being responsible I guess. Let the taxpayers pay.

Hope Basil's check up goes well.

Perrella 04-01-2011 02:05 PM

Checking back to see if any word of how the check up went. Hope, we hear soon.

When my house was burglarized, we were pretty much told if they were caught nothing would happen to them. Basically a slap on the wrist. They took over $40000.00 worth of stuff and our feeling of safety. They permanently scarred my children. And they permanently scarred me. I have had battle after battle with trying to go on and forget it. However, I think it will remain with me for a long time. The sad thing is they were never caught anyway. :( I can\'t tell you how it feels to come home to a situation like this.

For your inlaws, it will be even harder I am sure. I am so sorry they are having to deal with this. Steve, you would have my vote. So, when are you running?
