Sweet Peyton hurt his leg (all my fault, I am so ashamed!)

I am so happy to hear this! Thank goodness you followed up with them! Some vets mean well, but honestly with a fracture you should always go to a specialist! They deal with this stuff every day!

This morning he was ridiculously happy and playful. It was really hard to keep him calm before we left. And, he was walking on the leg, whereas yesterday he would put no weight on it at all. I think him taking it so easy yesterday was really good for him.

I have shared this in a lot of details because I am hoping it might help anyone who finds themselves in this position.

Here is what I must stress the most....please do not rely on your own opinion. Seek an orthopedic surgeon. In the past 36 hours I have been all over the place on what I thought he would need. Did he need to see a vet? Did he need x rays? Should he be sedated and get it wrapped? Should he get surgery? Should he get crate rest with no wrapping?

There are SO any scenarios for fractures. Each case is going to be completely different from the next. I was most stressed when I felt the decision on how to treat was up to me. What if I choose wrong? So many bad things could happen.

When I made the decision to go to Purdue and get an expert orthopedic surgeons opinion I felt much better. They are trained to diagnose and treat. I am not.

I am VERY hopeful that Peyton will heal well this week. But if something changes or he doesn't heal the way expected I will trust the surgeons opinion again.

In case anyone was wondering...the fee for the exam with the surgeon was
only $88. A very small price to pay to get an expert opinion.

I went there expecting to have to leave him to get the surgery. I took a few blankets, a toy, and his favorite bed to leave with him. They took him back and said it might take 20 minutes or two hours. (Depends on what they discover, and how quickly the surgeon can get to him, etc.). It ended up being just a little short of two hours. This is just for when they took him to the back. As I was sitting there I prayed some. I had been praying that the surgery would go well. Since it took so long I began to wonder if it was maybe better than what they thought. Don't know why my mind went there, but it did. So, I decided to pray that maybe the surgeon would come in and say it's fine, you can take him home, it's only a tiny fracture, is already almost healed, etc.

When they finally came in I still thought they were going to say he needed
surgery. I cannot express how thankful and relieved I was when they said what they did. I feel like my prayer was answered. I just have to take a moment to give Him all the thanks. Thank you Jesus for hearing my prayer and giving us some hope.

Thank you Ladyjane! I really mean that. You took the time to post the links and I was able to read them so quickly because of that. It really helped me see that this is more serious than I originally thought.

I have a saying..."When you know better, you should do better." I went into this not knowing a whole lot about fractures. You helped me to "know better"...which for me leaves no other option but to "do better."

Not everyone embraces the decision to do better when they know better. But, some people do. That is why this forum is important. That is why it is important for the members to reach out and offer help or education or advice.

So, although you (Ladyane) and others may feel like giving up, please don't. Sometimes your advice will fall on ears that are willing to take it. So again, thank you.

I am so sorry that your little boy fell and got hurt, i know you felt terrible about it but accidents happpen. I am so happy that he did not need surgery and hope he continues to heal. So happy for both of you.

I love my vet but i know i will be going to Perdue if God forbid anything happens to my dogs. I know it is an awsome place.

Thank you Lisaly. It was a little hard to go there today. The situation with the first Peyton was so heartbreaking. I thought about him so much today. They did the going home review with me in the same exam room that I was in with the first Peyton. Leaving Peyton overnight would have been more upsetting because I left the first Peyton there and never saw him again. But, I feel the first Peyton is in a better place now and is smiling down on the new Peyton. And leaving WITH Peyton today was incredible. When I walked up to the building carrying Peyton, I had such a sense of deja vu (sp?) I whispered to Peyton that no matter what, I would take him home eventually.

Everyone was so nice and helpful and knowledgeable at Purdue. It is possible
to let go of most of the bad feelings I associate with that place because of how great they are.

What a miracle this is. Your prayers and our prayers were answered. Hope little Peyton's time on the injured reserve list is short indeed and he is back starting again for the team in no time. What a great report. You were very wise to get an orthopedic surgeon's second opinion. You should feel very proud of yourself that you got the very best care for little P.

Praise the Lord! I am so absolutely thrilled to read your update! Sweet little Peyton...bless his heart! I'm just tickled pink and so happy that he didn't have to have surgery. What are you going to do to keep him quiet? Are you supposed to have him in something that he can't stand up in...or is it okay for him to stand now and then. He has never been in the crate that we have. He kind of likes his x pen and is really used to it. He has piddle pads and his food and water in there too. I have his little blue house in there with a snuggly sack type of bed in it. He likes to go in the house and sleep sometimes. There is also a heated bed in there that he loves. That is where he is sleeping right now.

I am going to start exposing him to the small crate and will see how he does. The surgeon stressed the need to be calm. Not running around, bouncing, freaking out, etc. She said if he doesn't handle the crate well, he would need to get wrapped. It is okay for him to stand and take a few steps but nothing more. As long as he lays down in the x pen, then we can use it instead of the crate. The other thing I will try is making the x pen about half it's current size. That way he is in a restricted rest area that he is comfortable with.

I just saw this thread now and am so happy for you that Peyton got good news at Perdue....everyone's prayers were definitely heard and answered. I love your quote about 'knowing better' and 'then doing better' .... not everyone believes as you do which is sad. Lucky for Peyton he has such a wonderful mom!

Yay! I really am happy too. I just want to stress that I am going to take his extreme crate rest very seriously. I want him to heal up on his own more than anything.

If he is not calm and quiet in the x pen then he will have to go to the crate.

Thanks for sharing your experience on this. One never knows when we will face something similar. When Pixie had to be on crate rest after her LP surgery I bought one of the small animal (guinea pigs, rabbits) ex pens at Petsmart. It was a life saver. I could move it easily from place to place and even on the bed so she could sleep on there. Pixie is not a jumper so I knew she wouldn't try to jump over it as it is very short. If Peyton is a jumper it may not work.
