| ![]() Does anyone know if the collapsed trachea with medication turns around. Do the yorkies just continue to struggle to breathe until they dye? I am so upset and worried. I just need answers and I have none. Thanks for all the feedback I can get. Michele |

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I have not had any experience with CT but I have seen some YT members on here who had dogs with CT. I hope some of those members can stop by to give you some more info.

| ![]() I'd assume treatment varies based on the severity of the condition & the age of the dog. Your dog's vet is your best resource for information & prognosis. Medication, such as corticosteriods & cough suppressants, can ease the breathing difficulties & hacking episodes, but doesn't correct the problem. I'll relate my experience with my own yorkie in the hopes that it may be of some benefit to you ![]() My last yorkie, Chelsea, was diagnosed with CT at about 1 1/2 years of age. Her condition was not severe at that time & symptoms could be minimized through behavior modification, training her to stay calm & not allowing her to becoming over-excited, etc. It was also important to keep her a very healthy weight & well exercised, as the disease affects the heart & lungs as it progresses and you want a good foundation to begin with. It was not until many years later that her breathing got noticeably worse and her stance changed. It wasn't until the last few years that she was put on prednisone. She went down hill very quickly at the end (from slight breathing difficult, to gasping for air) in less than a month and had to be to put sleep. Chelsea lived to be 11 1/2 years old and for over 11 of those years she was happy & active and loved running & playing with my kids. My kids were 5 & 3 when we got her and she didn't pass away until the start of my daughter's senior year in high school.

| ![]() Here is a site I found when my Bella was diagnosed with CT a couple years ago: Tracheal Collapse It is not a death sentence for all CT dogs and for many can be medically managed with diet, weight loss and medications. Surgery from what I've been told is reserved for the most severe of canidates and even then...it is not a promising outcome in the survival rates. Bella is nearly symptom free due to diet, weight loss and medications. She now is not on any medications and when I do start to hear some honking...we step up more walks, and watch her portion control.

| ![]() I am so sorry to hear of your dog having this awful condition. My little Mariposa (Mari) had severe CT. She got it at about 1 1/2 yrs and lost her this past June. She was 5. She had a hard strugle, but could be very good inbetween episodes that could last a day, week, month...with the constant gasping, honking. We learned that earplugs in bed were our friend. Sorry to put the sick humor in there, but sometimes, you just have to. I know that it varies in each dog. I used Torbogesic, which is a pain med to keep her calm. If I knew company was coming or any event....I went through a lot of it. Not to the point that she was wiped out, just a half a dropper. Although I might add that she did build up a tolerance and used more over the years. My little drug addict doggie. We also used steroids that you would put in the ear. This did not do much for her. There were a number of drugs that we tried but basically nothing really did the trick. The main thing is to keep her calm.. Another BIG one is not to let her get hot. When they start panting, it will bring it on quickly. Also, it got to where she had a problem chewing on a chew stick, (which she loved) because she would stop breathing regularly due to the chewing. I will be praying for your little one...if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. |

| ![]() I have had a few pups with collapsed trachea. Each one was a different degree. Not all of them get worse and die from it. My Maxwell who passed in 2004 was a very old man when he passed and it was not due to CT which he did have. As others have said, keeping their weight down is very important. Also keeping them cool and in a calm environment helps. There are many different medications that can be used .. and again it all depends upon the severity of the symptoms. Feel free to PM me if I can be of any help. I will keep you and your pup in my thoughts and prayers.

| ![]() As LadyJane said, it depends upon the degree of collapsed trachea. My little one would have difficulty breathing when she got excited. It was necessary for me to act quickly to bring her breathing under control. While she did get exercise and ran around the house playing much of the day, I constantly monitored her. When I wasn't working, she and her two sisters went most places with me. I always carried ice with me. When her breathing got more labored, I wet her feet and face to bring her body temperature down. Often I had to put her in the sink in cool water to get her temperature down. She would run to the back door to go outside so that she could cool off on the first step of our pool. Initially I started with a spray bottle to cool her off but needed to use more drastic measures when it was more serious. Once I was able to lower her body temperature, her breathing would return to normal. Although she had many attacks, Gracie lived such a happy, active, wonderful life, and she did everything at full speed. Her sister, Ashley, had problems with her trachea that we treated with Chinese herbs. It was not any way as bad as Gracie's, but it did cause her heart to enlarge. She lived one month short of seventeen, even though she had a collapsed trachea. Both lived such full, active lives. I hope you are able to find something to help your baby. Please know there is help available, and if I can help you in any way, just ask. |
