| Please help, my dixie ate chocolate!! My Dixie is 2 yrs old and weighs about 8 lbs, I woke up this morning finding six almonds all over my floor not knowing what they were from i just threw them away. A few hours has gone by and all my Dixie wants to do is sleep. I was talking to my fourteen yr old son and he asked me what i did with the chocolate package he bought from school and I told him i threw it away he told me that he thinks Dixie got a hold of it yesterday sometime, so i dug it out of the trash and yes it had evidence of a dog eating on the package. I don't know if she is sick or just being tired. Please help me. If you know anything about the school candy they sell for fundraisers its called "World's Finest Chocolate" it is Roasted Almonds covered in Rich milk chocolate. Each piece of candy is about the size of a quarter. The ingredients is the chocolate are : MILK CHOCOLATE(SUGAR, MILK, COCOA BUTTER, CHOCOLATE, SOYA LECITHIN [AN EMULSIFIER], VANILLLA [ AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR]); ROASTED ALMONDS (ALMONDS, COCOA BUTTER), CORN SYRUP, GUM ARABIC, AND CONFECTIOINER'S GLAZE.

| I'm sorry that Dixie isn't feeling well. I would call the vet and ask their advise. Maybe they can see you today, better safe than sorry. Good luck! |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Normally, the symptoms of chocolate toxicity are agitation, restlessness, muscle twitching and heart arrhythmias. But any symptom a dog is showing out of their norm (in this case, lethargy) is reason enough to go and have her seen by the ER vet ASAP. | I had a s**t Zhu once that ate about half a bag of M&M's (big bag) that my daughter left lying on the table. @ first when I found it he acted fine. Then he became more & more lethargic to the point that he wouldn't even lift his head when called or talked to. It was @ night so no vet was open so I called the nearest Emergency Vet Clinic. They immediately panicked & said to get him down there ASAP because chocolate of any kind is like giving a dog poison. Right when I started to pick him up to leave he vomited ALOT. I thought then that maybe he threw it all up & I watched & waited for about 30min. & he started to move around a little. Then he stood up & shook it off. After that he was fine except for a little sleepy. If you have an Emergency Clinic anywhere nearby I would call them to see what they say. You probably need to take your baby in to see them. If you don't have a clinic to go to then call 911. I've read that they will help if you need them. Tell them that your baby ate chocolate & it's like poison to dogs, you have nowhere else to take him & you need help. Tell them the symptoms. Very lethargic & anything else. I hope your baby is going to be fine but I wouldn't wait & take a chance that he'll get over this.

| Sorry to bother you again, but it doesn't matter what was in the candy. It was chocolate! If she's sleeping alot that's probably why & it could get worse. Don't wait around, call somebody.

| I called the local ER vet when Lucy ate chocolate. We knew that three pieces had been eaten. He asked how many ounces each piece was; then how many ounces were in the entire bag. There is some formula they use - but he was able to calculate that Lucy would have had to eaten a third of this particular bag to be toxic. Anthother thing that reassured him was that she had already thrown up. My point is - call an ER vet; they will help you over the phone IF they don't feel you need to come in. If they do have concerns - they may want you to come in. It wil be worth it. As you know, chocolate is toxic to dogs. I wouldn't wait to make that call.

| Please call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline ASPCA | Animal Poison Control Center their phone number is (888) 426-4435. There is a $65 fee but they will be able to tell you based on the weight of your pet and what they have ingested what is the best course of action. They will give you a case number which you can provide to you vet/emergency vet and they can speak with with for free for as many consultation that you need regarding this specific case. The ER Vets usually end of calling the hotline anyways and passing the charge on to you as part of the emergency visit. I hope your dog is feeling better soon. There is a great sticky in the YT library for chocolate. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...eight-dog.html Last edited by Buster Brown; 01-30-2011 at 10:53 AM. |

| GREAT post Ringo 1! A dog eating chocolate is very serious. Like you said, you don't wait around. You either go to a vet, emergency vet or get on the phone ASAP.My little one did fine after he threw up but untill then the lethargy was BAD. I was scared to death. I'm so thankfull he threw up when he did. The only reason I waited & watched for about 30min. after that was because I was a nurse for 26 years & saw that just about always if someone throws up they start feeling better right away. If he had shown any symptoms after he vomited that he was getting worse I would have left immediately for the clinic.

| Well I called a ER Vet and told them what was going on they said that she didn't get enough to be toxin to her but if her laying around got any worse to bring her in. I have been watching her and she is acting a little wierd, usually when we make a noise like knock on the wall or say who's here she is usually barking well she has only barked twice today and thats not like her. When we call her to come see us she usually runs to us, but not today. I am worried, but the vet doesn't seem to worried at all.

| Did you tell the vet all her symptoms? Like how she usually acts & how she's acted all day & still is? If she gets any more lethargic, shows any signs AT ALL that isn't normal you need to take her to the ER vet ASAP. It might be nothing but I wouldn't take ANY chances. If she's not acting better in the morning I'd have her @ the vet as soon as their doors open. Even if you have an appointment time. Just tell them what has happened & I'm sure they'll go ahead & see her, or they should! If it were me I know I wouldn't get any sleep @ all if she doesn't start to show signs of improvement. Please let me know how she does. I hope the best for your baby, & you.

| Dixie is seeming to become more active, she has been up and moving around and starting to bark, maybe she was just a little sick at her stomache. I am still going to keep an eye on her for another 24 hrs to make sure she is going to be ok. Thank you all for you comments and suggestions, it was greatly appreciated.

| Very glad hear she's feeling some better. It's a good idea to keep an eye on her though. She probably wasn't a little sick on her stomach. She was probably alot sick on her stomach. Chocolate is very dangerous for dogs. When my daughter saw how sick it made our little baby when he ate her M&M's it scared her to death. You can bet she never left anything laying around that he could get to & eat again. Hard lesson for her to learn. Let us know how she's doing tomorrow. Hope you both have a good night.
