I'm so glad you took her in for more treatment... I'm just hoping that maybe you were able to see a different vet this time?

And, yes, that much vomiting and diarrhea can really take a toll on any dog (humans too). And it does take time to restore the fluids that were lost, not to mention the blood that was lost. IV Fluids cannot be given too quickly, nor too much at one time, as they can end up in the wrong places (lungs). And as they can lose so much fluid and become severly dehydrated in such a short time, you can see how dangerous this HGE is, and why it can take longer to get them rehydrated and back to a healthy state.

I would also call her regular vet to let him know what is going on with her. Maybe he could consult on her treatment? Or you could request that he be involved? IDK, but it would be worth asking about IMHO.

I will be praying that she makes a rapid recovery... I know when the clinic where I worked sent HGE cases home, their PCV's were normal, the pups were eating and drinking on their own for one entire day at the hospital, and they were 'bouncing off the walls' wanting to go home!

Chloe went in to see my vet this morning. His wife been very ill and has been very and been in and out of the hospital for the last month so I wasn't able to get her in yesterday so I took her first thing this morning. He said her prognosis is very good because we got her treatment quickly and without it she could have died. He wants her on a bland low fiber diet for at least the next 2 weeks and he will recheck her then to see if we can start getting her back on her regular diet.

I pray your vet's wife recovers quickly... so glad he was able to see Chloe today and that she is on the road to recovery.... Keeping you both in my prayers...

This was an interesting post, and glad Chloe is doing so well. My girlfriend's Westie looked like he was going downhill fast, and we took him to the university vet teaching hospital in Denver. They immediately put him on IV fluids and he perked up a lot the next day. He's doing fine now, but I think it's a lesson that when small dogs get dehydrated they really need emergency care asap.

They did blood work and x-rays and came back in to tell me she was really sick, her stomach and intestines were inflamed and she had more bloody diarrhea while they were taking the test and more vomiting. The blood work they their was no infection but the she was severely dehydrated sometime about about normal was in the 20's and she was in the 60's and 65 was critical. They started an IV and and going to give her some medications and they kept her. He couldn't figure out what's going on with the tests he took and hopes it isn't anything the other can get. Please say a prayer for my baby. Has anyone had their dog go down so quickly like this when they were fine a few hours before? He said they could do test for pancreas, and liver when the get her to stop vomiting. She's was only 5.5 lbs so he said she could go down fast.

Did your vet do an x ray. It is amazing how much can be determined by an xray. I had a problem recently and went to 4 vets until finally found one that did an xray that got us on the right track. My prayers and thoughts are with you. I am so sorry for you and your little one.

Hi yes they did x-rays and the vet could tell by them the problems in her stomach and bowels and they did blood work and when they took her temp that is when the bloody diarrhea started spraying out of her.
She is acting like herself again now playing and jumping up on everything again and just being her lovable cute self . She's a daddy's girl and loves the weekends when my husband is home.
