| 8 week old w/ Giardia & Tapeworms My brand spankin new puppy, Posey has been acting completely fine, but I spotted some wiggly creatures in her poo (so gross)... I had my boyfriend take her to the vet for a fecal test and it turns out she has Giardia as well as Tapeworms. Now, I've checked her for fleas, so she must have ingested one at some point to give her the worms. Not quite sure where the giardia came from... maybe from my 6 year old yorkiepoo??? Either way - how contagious are these issues and how easy are they to get rid of? I just worry about medications for Posey since she is so young. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Girardia comes from being exposed to the parasite through water or food that has been contaminated with infected dogs feces. More than likely it came to your house with it from the breeders. I would talk to the vet about having your yorkiepoo tested, too. You'll need to be scrupulous in keeping bowls and toilet areas clean while you are treating for the disease.

| Welcome. Posey has a sweet face. Love that button nose. When I first got Buster he had Giardia and Coccidia. Giardia can be passed to humans so be very careful. Clean any floor area with hot water and bleach. I continually would wash all Buster's Bedding with hot water and bleach until we got the all clear. Make sure to clean up poop asap and wash wash wash your hands. Someone else suggested to have your dog poop on concrete if outside because it will be easier to clean up after. | Tapeworm is very easy to get rid of. Since he's eight weeks old I'm assuming they will prescribe him 1/2 a tablet of Droncit. It should clear it up almost immediately. You must maintain great hygiene, and clean up the stool immediately after he uses the bathroom (if he is going on piddle pads indoors) I have no experience with the other one. |

| The tapeworm is actually pretty easy to get rid of. Once you give the medicine, the puppy will vomit it up. Be prepared to actually see it and it's pretty creepy. Daisy (my Chi) came to us with a tapeworm and we had to wait for her to reach two pounds before giving the medicine. That was really the only problem. Ever try gaining weight with a tapeworm? |

The vet may not even want that pup to have that medication. This is something only a vet should do!

| I'm not advocating that she buys it online, I just sent the link for the information on weight which is what I used to check what they prescribed Teddy. When the vet gave me the droncit I looked up information online about it for side effects, etc. Of course I only gave it to him after a vet prescribed it to him. I have never bought medication online and never will. I am not a veterinarian, I just simply like to look up everything before I give it to my dog. That's what I meant when in my post I said "I'm assuming *they* will prescribe him..." by they I meant vet. I should have been more clear. I apologize for the misunderstanding. They gave her drontal and wanted to look into a flea treatment too... but she doesnt have fleas. And I think she's too young for a flea treatment anyway. Hopefully the drontal will clear everything up. They are (aafter all) both parasites. She has a 3 day prescription and is going to need another dose in 3 weeks - just to be sure it's all gone. I'm planning on calling my vet today to see if I need to get my yorkiepoo tested as well, though he is showing no symptoms - but neither did Posey. Other than the wormy poo. Yuck. | |
