| Coccidia and Giardia! So I just found out the results of the stool sample and my Baby Chan has Coccidia and Giardia! I am once again terribly worried and sad for! I want so bad for her to be feeling well and healthy. She has started one of the medicines already but the other won't be available until Monday. The meds are panacur and ponazuril. If anyone has any advice, experience, words of wisdom... I would greatly appreciate it! Can't wait til I know enough to help others here! Right now I can only ask from those who know more than I do. Thanks in advance! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | The medicines work pretty quickly. Cali had coccidia when I got her and the medicine cleared it up pretty quickly. Just make sure she is eating. These little ones worry us so, but she should feel better soon.

| Tia had both, plus ringworm, when we adopted her earlier this year. Just a word of advice, it is easy to transfer from pet to pet, so be careful. I looked it up on the web when I found out what it was and started picking up poop immediately and pooring bleach water on each spot. It can live in the ground for a couple of months. Meaning: If a dog steps in the same spot, even after picked up, he/she can get it. (That's why we don't go to dog parks!) Sending hugs and kisses for your baby to feel better soon. |

| You are both so kind to share your experience! Happy to hear the meds work quickly! I can't imagine anything living inside her and taking anything away from her when she is so small! She can not afford it! Happy to say though that she looks thicker rather than thinner, since I've had her. She us eating pretty good. And I certainly wont be taking her anywhere that there is a risk of any kind to her health. Good to know about it being possibly contagious to other pets. I don't know about doing the bleach. Nervous being that I have a cat and three dogs total here. Seems risky? Wish I could do it though! It would be horrible if it was passed to anyone else! Anyway I'm going to do everything I can to keep the dogs away from Baby Chan's poopy area! Glad to hear Cali is better! And I hope Tia is doing good as well! Is she free from the parasites? Thanks for the hugs & kisses!!! Will pass them along to Baby Chan! |

| Panacur is a dewormer, it is what I used on Elvis he came to me loaded with whip worms...well I had to treat all my dogs because he had been here three days so they could have all had them then, Panacur is pretty safe and really effective I totally trust it, it kills several types of worms. Ponazuril is an antibiotic used to treat Coccidia, I'd prefer a different sulfonamide, ALBON. For the Guardia (was it G. Canis-?) Fenbendazole in conjunction with Metronidazole, maybe your vet felt that Ponazuril was appropriate in treating both-but you should know it is one of the lowest cost antibiotics...bleach. bleach, bleach and you may want to consider a trip to your Dr. for a regiment of antibiotics as a precaution Guardia is not to be messed around with. I know this is gross but if you can get your dog to potty on cement or anything but dirt or grass DO IT it is easier to bleach cement or even tile and ensure you kill parasites rather than let them gestate and later re-infest your pet because you l can't guarantee bleach in soil will reach it all-you know to remove all pooh immediately right-don't let it stay on the ground bag it and toss it in your garbage-while wearing gloves then toss them too immediately. |

| Panacur should do the trick, but don't be surprised if it takes a couple of rounds. I can speak from personal experience that girardia in particular is a nasty little parasite. I had it (got it when camping and used an old water filter that should have been replaced) and it stuck around for awhile. Took several courses of antibiotics to get it to go away completely.

| When I first got Buster he too had both Coccidia and Giardia. He was originally treated with Albon and Panacur. He had to be treated several times to finally get rid of the Giardia I also continually washed all his bedding and my bathroom floors with a beach and hot water mixture. Was your hands all the time and remove any poop asap. |

| Revival animal.com BOTH ARE invisable to the eye kinda PARASITES AND LAY DORMANT and are really dangerous if you wait too long.Stress brings them out. stress like leaving one home and going to the new one. Safeguard de-wormers can be found at most places. It is fenbenzadole and it works great. Also Albon is the best. If your pup is small use it at different times of the day. metronitazole, albon and fenbenzadole..pancur is good too. So sorry but stress brings this out and it can flare up in just a few days from exposure. So good you did a stool test, that means your vet did his job. all new pups should be stool tested and medicated quickly if it is seen under a scope. It is very common . Good luck with your pup |

| Thank you for all the replies. There are certainly many things I did not know and have learned here on YT! Thanks!!! It sounds like Baby Chan would be better off pooping on cement. I will get right onthat! She isnt going to like it but gotta try! She just loves going on grass and even seemed a bit down this weekend from the weather and not being able to go run and poo in the yard!! At least I hope that's why she seemed a but sad. So yes I've been reading lots and certainly heard albon mentioned many times which is why i posted and questioned my vet why she chose the meds she did. Had not idea panazuril is the cheapest antibiotic. Hmm. I'm going to call the vet in a little while. Wow so my family and I need to be very careful about getting the Giardia too! Darn this stinks! My poor baby... Shes been acting so sad these past few days. She's eating and drinking but not playin. Also I think her pee smells pretty strong. Goodness I hope she's ok. Thank you all so much again! Love you people taking the timeto help!!! |
