Yorkie Seizure

We have two Yorkies and are have problems with the 2.5 year old Yorkie. She has had what two vets think are a series of seizures. The last one she drooled excessively and was out of it for a good while. Her eyes were vacant. The vet gave her subcutaneous electrolites, which seemed to help. But after a while she started drooling again excessively. The vet wants us to watch her for a while before we medicate her. I agree, but I would like to know what is triggering it.

She is back to normal, but again I am concerned about what the trigger is. She is afraid of loud noises. Could this have started the seizure? Could it be low blood sugar?

I am giving her Pedalite orally by syringe every several hours along with Nutrical.

Any similiar events with your Yorkie?

Has she had blood work or any tests?

Yes, everything was mostly normal. Liver and kidney were normal. She did have a slightly low blood sugar.

You saw the seizures? How long did they last? And you say a series of seizures. Was it one right after another or days?

Did your Vet do a Bile Acid Test? Might be a shunt or MVD. One of ours has MVD and this can be controlled by diet. VERY low protein. http://www.vetinfo.com/dliver.html

Has she had an MRI ? Has she recently been vaccinated ? And have you noticed any other changes in her behavior besides the seizures like eating habits or is she restless or seem to be more sleepy ?

Our yorkie pup was also having these seizures and experienced the same thing, but our one was crying really loudly and then would go into a seizure. They also did a number of tests and couldn't find anything. He was then stable and then got worse and worse and they had to put him down as he just was in a really bad way and they said, he wouldn't survive.Sorry i don't want to upset you i just want to help you find out what's wrong as vets don't have answers to everything. They weren't able to find out what it was, but said, it looked neurological. Our little one was a puppy and just too small to do more tests.

So please, please watch your one closely. Our one also went through a patch were he was fine and he had no temperature, no low blood sugar. I would suggest you maybe get a second opinion or ask your vet to do a scan or more blood work. As it could be serious or the start of something serious. Please i don't want you to go through what we have just been through. Hope this helps. I'm not an expert, but i'm sure every bit of information helps.

How big is your Yorkie?
What do they eat?
How do you feed...free feed or scheduled feeding?
How often are you giving the Nutrical?
Why do you give pedialyte?

My vet told me a few years ago that Nutrical can actually cause low blood sugar because it is used to raise the blood sugar and then the sugar drops. If you are using it on a regular basis maybe you should talk with your vet about something else. Is your Yorkie not eating and that's why you're using the Nutrical?

There are man things that can cause seizures...they shouldn't just be medicated because they had a seizure...the cause of the seizure needs to be found and the problem needs to be treated...not the sympton. Sometimes it can be something as simple as exposure to a chemical or toxin, a food allergy or a reaction to a vaccine. Please look at the whole picture before starting your Yorkie on meds of any kind and get a second opinion if you feel you need to.

You said she was drooling a lot...have you had a canine dentist check her mouth? A bad tooth, cracked tooth, cavity, something stuck in there, abccess etc... can cause a lot of pain, make them not want to eat (which would cause low blood sugar) and they would drool...pain would give her the vacant look in her eyes. Not saying that's the problem...just suggesting you have her mouth checked to possibly rule it out.

Did your Yorkie have any shots before this started? She is about the age that a booster is recommended. I just had a flu shot and had a weird reaction so I know it happens. Injuries can also cause seizures. Has she been injured recently...like playing hard and bumping her head or falling or anything like that?

Keep an eye on her and document when/if she has an issue again...note things that might have changed or what was happening at the time of the seizure or even a few days before, what she may have eaten, what chemicals you used inside or out, if she had any new foods or vaccinations or medications...this information will be mportant to your vet in finding the underlying problem.

Does she get table food of any kind? I believe there are some human foods that can cause seizures in animals.

I hope this was a one time reaction to something and that it will never happen again and I hope she is feeling better now.
