| ![]() Okay last night i was rechecking the nail cut back on the original problem toe and it looks good, no nail splitting. Who knows what caused the swelling and infection there other than her licking at it. As i'm going along her feet i notice a front toe has the same thing wrong, upon further investigation it is swollen, red inflammed, has crusty crap around it. Took her to the vet again, she can't pin point the cause of this. Allergies would make her chew her entire foot not just one toe. It could be mosquito bites causing her to chew/lick it raw. It could be something like ringworm or demodex (she's doing a skin culture now) it's infected by cocci bacteria. Anyone ever seen anything like this?? |

My George recently had an infection (bacteria and fungal) between two pads on one foot....caused, we believe, by licking. When they lick a lot, they can end up with an open area that is susceptible to germs. He has allergies and does lick his feet when they are bad. He had a shot of Convenia and we applied animax each day...he is fine now.

| ![]() Oh...my vet suggested George wear boots outside or that I wipe his feet every time he comes in from outside.

| ![]() I used to have a little special needs min pin that had terrible nails. They would split as they grew out and eventually fall off. She was always tender footed, but never licked at her paws and never had one get infected. She was a manic jumper and I often contributed bruising from jumping as part of her problem. The shorter we kept her nails the less of a problem we seemed to have. She was on a lot of medications too which could be what made her nails so weak.

| ![]() it's not that it's the infection that's the cause, that's the effect here..we don't know the cause. could be allergies, insect bites, demodex, ringworm or other things. the chewing at her paw and toe is the reason she got them infected...we'll know from the ringworm culture where to go next. |

| ![]() Your sentence above was confusing. Since my vet was able to culture and come to a conclusion on the spot, I read that as your vet concluded there was a bacterial infection. Of course it would not be the cause. As I said in my post, my George has allergies and licks which leaves him open to infections of different types.

| ![]() Rachel, I hope you get some answers. I was trying to point out that the cause may not be allergy or skin related. It could be from injury or pain (as with my dog only she never got it infected, it was certainly painful). Pain will also cause a dog to lick an isolated an area or nip at it enough to cause infection.

| ![]() Pay extra attention to drying her feet after a bath. Is she standing in water while being bathed? If so try just using the spray without filling the sink or tub. That will stop her nails from softening as much. Ringworm can be detected under a black light like the ones used to detect urine spots in carpeting.... quicker than waiting for results from a lab. The skin will floresce like dayglo paint, or glow brightly in a darkened room.
