I usually put about 4 oz of diluted milk in the dish I use and add about 1/2 tsp of karo. I don't remember seeing an exact amount to use but that has worked well for me. The karo is good for energy and I've read that dog's milk is sweeter than goat's milk so you're just bringing it up to about the same 'sweetness'.

I need to double the Karo. Gave him my recipe at 6 pm (central time), but I'll redo it for the 8 pm feeding. This is probably why I'm so tired. lol Thank you! Lin 'Junior' (that's what the vet called him.) thanks you, too.

Best of luck with the little guy. I've never tube fed but have instead used an eye dropper. I think you'll find the goat's milk more agreeable to his digestive system. Remember to burp him after feeding so he doesn't get gassy. Is Mom diapering him? My girls have done that after a feeding and we operated as "co-Moms".

Hopefully he'll get some size soon and be able to nurse on his own. In the meantime, hang in there

Went back and read this. 1/4 cup is 2 oz so what you're using is in line with what I use. I use about 1/2 tsp to 4 oz so I'm just making double the amount you are. The ratio is the same as what you're using.

I had put a pic of the entire litter on Facebook w/a note about the little guy. One of my breeder friends called me and gave me a recipe. She is raising a Yorkie baby born w/cleft pallet. She kept him thriving on this recipe (she's also a nurse) until she could have surgery on him which was a success. Here's the recipe: 10 oz undiluted goat's milk
1 Cup whole milk yogurt (Dannon makes
one--Walmart)
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. Karo
Mix all together and feed every 3 1/2 hrs. The yogurt helps their digestive system and she agrees goat's milk is much better, but being undiluted, w/ the whole yogurt should help him thrive, if he's going to.
I was holding him before feed and he didn't seem to be breathing through his mouth. Still won't stay on the teat, but I still think it's due to weakness.
Will keep posting. Maybe someone else can learn along with me. Lin

Oops!!! That's every 3 hours until they are 4 weeks old, then every 4-6 hours on above recipe. Double checked w/my source.

My vet told me that it had to be diluted or the pup will get dehydrated. You can add the yogurt and raw eggs to put on weight if needed to the original recipe, I tried that once though and the pup got diarrhea and was really whiny after so I went back to the original recipe....

BTW: Have any of you heard about the Beef Liver Remedy? Do any of you think this is 'fading puppy syndrome'? He's the only one in the litter of 5 who has a problem.
He's still at 3.8 oz. seems to have gone down 1/10th since last night, but maybe he was just wiggling too much on the scales. I'm looking for some weight gain......Any weight gain.

Yes, keep an eye out for dehydration. Pinch the scruff of the neck and lift gently. It should go back down slowly. Make sure baby's gums are pink. NEVER let him get cold.
I used an electric candle warmer with a cup of water on it to warm my cleftie's bottle. You could do the same with your syringe.
I didn't have to tube feed until mine was a little older.

Oh, and it is very much possible that the vet won't see a cleft until he's older. Zacchie's was just a pin-hole when he was that tiny. Now that he's grown, it is a full mid-line cleft.

4.0 oz at 8 pm (9/21) Whooo! Hooo! I'm so excited.
I checked w/my source on the Leerburg diet regarding dehydration. The yogurt takes care of dehydration issues. Think about it. There's a lot of moisture in yogurt. You know how when you open it on the second day, there's a lot of 'water' sitting on top? So it's not a problem. It seems to be a great recipe, so far.
