Theophylline...anyone use it for their baby?

rhetts mom,, you are correct that most of the time time released meds should not be cut in half however if they are scored they can infact be cut in half,, if scored they make sure the same amount of med is in each side,
these can be cut in half and i think think that is the only way the theophylline comes you dont want all the drug absorbed in the body at the same time and thephylline has a pretty hig absorption rate, so they use the time release to slow it down.

The reason you don't cut time released meds (even scored ones) is because the coating around the tablet is part of the time release mechanism. It slows down the absorption rate. Unless you are specifically told to do so by your vet or pharmacist, it's not ok to do as you are exposing too much medication and risk over dosing.

ETA: Scratch that- that's the extended release tabs which should never be split in to separate doses. Doing so can result in an over dose of the medication.

I am surprised that CVS didn't have it in stock.

After Prince finishes with these two, I'll get the script filled at a drug store. I do feel our vet takes advantage of us sometimes. I wonder why there is such a mark up when you get meds from the vet as opposed to a drug store?
