| Terrifying for Us . . . A Very Close Call I am posting this now that I have experienced EXTREME terror/panic when I thought our beloved Bella had broken her leg/hip. She ran up her little bed stairs too quickly and fell off, landing hard on our wooden floor. She let out a loud yelp and continued to moan (in a weird way) for about 1 1/2 minutes. My husband rushed over and picked her up and held her. We kept her inactive and waited to see, we were ready to rush her to the vet. She turned out to be scared as she is not showing any signs of pain, incapacity, etc. today. She's acting and moving and running 100% normal. In that short time I realized I would not know what is best to do when a bone does break. I know get her to the vet, but what immediate care should be given to reduce pain and protect further damage from the break. We have almost an hour drive to a vet. I can't put into words how devestated we felt when we thought she was hurt. We realize accidents happen and want to be prepared just in case. Thank you so much for any guidance you could give us. |

| Wow... how scary! I have no advice to give you because our closest emergency vet is only 5 minutes away. I'm just glad to hear that she is doing fine Hope someone else is able to give you some advice.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | When Jersey Boy broke his leg it was a Sunday afternoon, we called out vet ( at the time we didn't know it was broken we were hoping sprained or just bruised) out vet told us to give a baby asprin wait 20 minutes if Jersey didn't seem better to call back and he would meet us at the office to x-ray. I don't know if the baby asprin helped him or not.

Rule of thumb for cold packs 10 minutes on 15 minutes off.

| Keep as immobile as possible and get to a vet. One thing I've done is printed out exact directions to all the nearby 24-hour veterinary hospitals in my area. I keep them in a designated spot so that, if something ever happens, I don't have to take the time to find directions or phone numbers.

| Can you /should you put the ice pack right directly on their little leg or hip, or should you put a light towel on first & then the ice pack? |

| I haven't heard of another breed of dog that breaks legs as frequently as the Italian Greyhound. Knock on wood, I haven't had to experience a break yet, but I have a little doggie splint here. It would be too big, as is, for Liz, but it can be cut shorter. Also, there is what is known as the death scream in IGs, that really makes you believe they have broken a leg, and usually they have.

A note if you are two hours away from emergency vet, then on route to vet you will need to release compression a bit and check for circulation to the leg. Then rewrap. This is to guard against having the bandage too tight.
