Princess is not feeling well My yorkie is 1 year old. Yesterday she vomitted a few times. Today she is acting very depressed. She will drink water, but I can not get her to eat. I thought she had gotten into the cat food and that had made her sick, but I thought she would be better today. I can't take her to the vet until Monday. Any advise on what to do until then?

If she got into cat food, it is higher in fat usually than dog food and could give her pancreatitis. Signs of pancreatitis include the things you mentioned - vomiting, inappetence, depression, lethargy. I would take the dog to a vet today if you can. They can quickly dehydrate and may need fluids under the skin as well as pain medication. I would not wait, if it is pancreatitis, you may find that as the day goes on, the dog is in more pain and you have a serious situation on your hands. I would call around to area vets or get her to an ER vet. Please post an update as well.

Well, I did end up taking her to the vet. The only one open was the one at Petsmart. I would not recommend them. They are way over priced. For $85 they told me it was not pancreatitis. They wanted to do a fecal and gardia test also which would have costed me $145. I told them that I did not have the money. So they then recommended a shot for nausea and subq fluids which would have costed $150 also. Things are just tight right now and I don't have alot of extra money. So I asked to have a copy of the labs that they ran so I could take her to my vet Monday. Well, come to find out the test is only positive or negative, (kind of like a pregnancy test) not actual results. That is what I got for $85. So, I brought her home. Since we got home, I have gotten her to eat several bites of chicken and about a teaspoon of can dog food. She is also licking ice cubes. She is not her normal self yet, but I see some improvement. So, I am going to keep an eye on her and if she is not better by Monday I will take her to my vet.

I am not a fan of Banfield/Petsmart, either, but if you don't have an ER vet, then you will have to deal with them. Money may be tight, but this is something you can't afford to skimp on. She will only get sicker and your bill will get higher. At the very least she needs those subq fluids and the anti nausea shot they recommended. Hospitalization with IV fluids will be the next step if she gets any more dehydrated. Dehydration alone is very, very serious. It causes an electrolyte imbalance that can even cause cardiac arrest. If it sounds like I am trying to scare you, I am. We had a very similar situation with a little Maltese on another forum just last week. The owner got the shot and subq fluids last Sunday, although the ER vet strongly advised her to hospitalize the dog so she could get IV fluids. Money was tight also so the owner decided to bring her home and take her to her regular vet the next day to save some money. The poor dog got so much worse in the next 24 hours that her regular vet could not save her the next day and she died.

Well, I appriciate your concern, but she is doing much better. The vet said she was not really dehydrated, and her abdomen was not and is not tender at all. Since my last post she is up playing and running around with the cat. I can give sub q fluids to her as I have and always keep on hand a bag of iv fluid. (I raise dairy goats so my vet sells this to me along with some other meds.) I am also a nurse so know all about dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. But since she was drinking, that was not my greatest concern. I was concerned that her blood sugar would drop because she was not eatting, and I could not get her to eat. The vet did not recommend hospitalizing my dog, and even if she had, I would not have left her. I can watch her better at home then they can. Especially considering she would have been in a cage all night without anyone there. And I can guarentte she would not have eatten anything if they would have kept her. Now that is not to say there are not situations that a dog needs to be hospitalized, but this was not one of them. So, I will monitor her. If she takes a turn for the worse, I can take her back. I just don't like vets to take advantage of people. I know that it does not cost $40 for each of the 3 test they wanted to run. Last edited by T LYNN; 07-17-2010 at 09:05 PM.

Princess is back to her normal self today. She is eatting, drinking and playing! I guess she just had a virus or eat something that she should not have, whatever it was, I am glad that she is better. The only problem now is that we spoilt her by giving her whatever she would eat. Now she thinks she is too good for her dog food and wants chicken!
