| HELP...squinty eye I haven't gotten to post a whole lot over the summer, I apologize for that. My grandfather also died almost a month ago....things have been really hectic and hard to say the least. Anyway, Kelli was playing around on Friday. All of a sudden she yelped and was squinting her eye alot. It went away and she didn't do it again until Saturday, and now she hasn't stopped. She doesn't squint it all the time...she still plays, really doesn't act like anything's wrong. The only thing is alot of gunk has been building up in it, at times she'll let us get it out, other times she'll jerk her head and won't let us open the lid at all. She only seems to squint alot right after waking up or if someone even gets their hand near that eye. She acts scared like we're going to poke her in it. I've read some of the posts here about scratched eyes, and while some of the way she's acting sounds like that's what it could be I just thought she'd be in more pain over it, I guess (not that I'm wishing that on her, heavens no, I was just trying to gauge exactly what it is). She really hasn't acted like anything has bothered her since it happened. She plays, barks, and acts like the normal Kelli. I'm waiting for a call back from the vet, but my first thought was to come here and just talk to you guys about it. I'm just worried about her and sick to my stomach over it, I want her to be okay, I don't want her to have to go through surgery, she's led such a hard life. She was abused before we got her. I just want her to be okay. Any reassurance would be so appreciated. It'd be much better than all the worried thoughts that are going through my head right now as I wait for this phone call. |

| She might have something in there, i.e., dirt, piece of food, etc. Or it could be infected....like we can get "pink eye", I believe they can too. And if you've ever had pink eye, you know it bothers you, and that is why she is squinting. When you take her to the vet, he will be able to look in there and see what's up. I wouldn't keep bothering her with it. One time, my little Sierra had a pebble in her eye. It was just sitting in the corner of her eye, and when she looked sideways, I saw it. I couldn't believe what I saw! Of course I got it right out and then she was fine. She never complained, and if I hadn't seen it on my own, who knows what would've happened!! It was about half the size of a pencil eraser top. I can't imagine how she got it in there. We live out in the country, and we have a lot of gravel, but I am always with them. I figured her sister, Chewy, was doing the "potty dance" and she must have been in back of her and one flew in there. Phew! That was a close one! Good luck with your baby and she is in my prayers. I'm sure she will be alright! |

| I hope her vet appt goes ok tomorrow. She probably just scratched it on something or has a bit of dirt trapped in there that may be causing all the irritation. But if "gunk" is building up I'd suspect an infection so some antibiotics might be in order.. Hope she feels better ASAP. Very sorry to hear about your grandfather passing away.. You'll be in my prayers

| You could put Neosporene ointment in her eye. Put some in her eye before she goes to bed for the night. It's a little messy but it helps. I have used it on my dogs this way. |

| Thank you all so much for your kind words about my grandfather and Kelli. I'm anxious to get her vet appt. over with, every time she squints or acts like it bothers her I feel horrible that I can't help. Last night she started acting like it itched her, we keep having to tell her no when she goes to scratch it or rubs up against something. It's really, really watery today. I've been reading up alot on scratches and it's freaking me out, I hope it's nothing too serious. |

| Maybe you could try snuggling w/ her and holding a warm compress/rag against her eye. The heat and the moisture may make her feel a little better!

| Hey everyone, just wanted to give an update. We got back from the vet about 15 minutes ago. It is a scratch, actually got to see it. It's a small little thing down in the corner of her eye. They want to keep a close eye on it, so we'll be bringing her back in Monday morning. We have ointment to give her and they gave her a shot for the pain so she won't squint. The Dr. said it should heal itself, but they of course want to make sure that it doesn't turn into an ulcer. I feel a little better, but I don't like this "not out of the woods" feeling that I have, so I'll be kinda anxious till we take her back in on Monday morning. I don't like knowing my babies are hurt in any way and that it could become worse. I'm a worrywart about it, lol. One bad thing though.....she's gained 2 pounds since her last visit in APRIL. I'm so ashamed. We try to make sure she's active, we give her alot of veggies and if we feed her chicken it's all lean meat. We even have her on vet provided food that's lean and good for her kidneys. Can someone give any tips on how we can get her weight down some? She now weighs 10.3lbs. |
