| Need advice on possible anal gland I have a 2 yr old male Yorkie, Krefflo. I notice a swollen spot beside his anus . Its a purple color, hard knot like a marble. He is not acting funny or acting like it hurts. I took a warm washcloth and washed his backside carefully, slightly pushing against it. It doesnt seem to bother him at all. I am worried that it might be an anal glad and might rupture. Is there anything I need to do for this. Its Saturday and my vet is closed. I have no problem taking him if we need to go, but he is in no pain and I was hoping someone could tell me what I can do , if anything. He is my little baby boy and I want to avoid discomfort if at all possible. I would be so thankful if someone could give me some advice. Thank you! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | he needs to have his anal glads expressed by a vet since it appears to be swollen. You don't want to do it yourself or have a groomer do it in case the glad ruptures. It may be infected or impacted. Or it might not be related to the anal glad at all. Not sure if it warrants a ER visit, that is up to you.

| Call the vet!! It could be a prolapsed rectum. Or something else with the anal gland. I would call the vet this is not normal. Sending prayers your way that everything is ok.

| Update...Vet called me back and after asking me many questions, he feels like it is anal gland. The knot is in the 7oclock position and definately seperate from the rectum. There is nothing coming out of the rectum. He told me to put warm compresses on it and watch him very closely and to watch him poop and check it immediately after to be sure it doesnt look like something pink coming from his rectum, or see if he is having signs of straining. If he is having either symptom he wants to see him immediately. He is so nice and he told me that when he expressed his glands about 2 months ago, they were on the hard side. Im taking him in on Monday morning but my Vet gave me his cell number and told me not to call the answering service, to call him with any concerns and he will meet me at his office. So we all feel better and we are just gonna snuggle on the sofa with a warm cloth...(and, of course, the cell phone!) |

| It does sound an awful lot like an impacted anal gland. Please watch it closely as ruptures are NOT good. |

| Yes I will!!! He is not leaving my sight for one second!. MY vet just called me backand said he is going in to office later to check on a pet that had surgery and said I could bring Krefflo by if that would make me feel better so Im going when he calls. I dont want that thing to rupture either. Wonder what he will do if its impacted and he cant get it to express? These sweet babys!!! Cant help but just love them!! |
