Roxy is sick, either Pancreatitis or Disc Issue

Vet called me Sat evening. Her blood results were all in normal range, except her Lipase was elevated, which he said would be since she had diarrhea.

The shot he gave her was Cimetidine - he said it is like Tagamet for dogs. And apparently she really, really needed it. We spoke in great lengths and because she got better, we feel she must have had a very severe stomach and GI and GAS issue. I still am in amazement that she was effected so badly bc of it, she was truly down for the count on this one...

I asked about the disc issue, he said we will monitor her. He said that was only 'an interpretation' of that xray, not that it is anything set in stone.

So all in all (and $300 later) - my Roxy girl had GAS

Thanks for all the input and well wishes...I was really really worried, as her behavior simply turned bizarre (for her) and I was fearing the worst!

lol $300 GAS bill - well glad she is doing better and I would gladly pay that over the other options Hope she continues to get better and glad you updated us on her improvement as you know we worry

I have always been told the lipase and amylase have to both be up to be pancreatitis though. Also have been told they are not super accurate anyway as dex was all over the place with those when he was sick and was getting me frustrated as they were normal when he was sick and high when he was feeling better. Dee Dee always has high lipase on blood work but has not had pancreatitis and on steroids. Dex has high lipase and high triglycerides on last blood work too so maybe high lipase is normal in this breed as well since both my yorks have it on their blood work each time and why prone to pancreatitis as lipase is the enzyme that digests fats- just a thought as i question it everytime it shows up as dd has blood work twice a year and dex once a year and each time it shows up elevated where as demi does not have this and she is a maltese

Totally understand that, but I'm saying my gut tells me that it was more than gas because it lasted a few days. However, it doesn't really matter as long as she is better.

Ellies lipase stays high also.

I know. And my brain is spinning... I don't know what to blame this on. Too much cheese? Hubby said she ate a few pieces of TJs chicken over the weekend. Too much Romaine Lettuce. IDK that's all it could have been over the weekend.

Then I could have added to it, bc during the week, I did go a little over board on the Romaine Lettuce with them, and I gave them some of my green apple (no skin). And I started the VSL again...

I really just don't know what did it...but YES she was in EXTREME discomfort and pain, it still blows my mind

You are correct, bc I saw it in Monday night at 10:30 pm when I got home. And I was gone since Thrs night, so I can't really say for sure "when" it started. And she got worse and worse, until Friday AM when she went to the Vet. So that was about 4 days of this going on. During this time she was pooping normal, until a glob of D came out on Thrs night and again Friday morning. IDK - but I am being very strict with what she eats now and will rush her back if something like this happens again.

I'd request a Spec cPL if it happens again just to be sure. I mean, gas is painful, but why for like three days?

And if she did get extra cheese, it may have just been too rich? I see lots of people giving cheese, but when it comes to anything except cottage, I have to wonder if it's too just too rich. Ellie had a tiny piece of parmesan (like a shred or two) before and spit/threw it up. She doen't seem to be able to handle it. So I'd just stick to what is in the recipe...

The apple could cause upset, but I thought she was used to that.

Her recipe calls for Cottage Cheese (I use the 1% and no sodium added), and some Low Fat Shreded Colby Cheese (I use the Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Colby-Jack Cheese).

They get Fuiji Apples in the morning, but on Tues I was eating a Green Apple for dinner and was giving them some, plus a little extra Romaine. So maybe hubby was giving her a little too much cheese over the weekend, and then I topped it off with the extra Green Apple and Romaine.

cheese??? the only cheese is low fat cottage cheese - but i have seen some people give another cheese on liver groups when dog will not eat. Cheese is really high in fat and would be very careful with that.

I agree spec cpli and snap inhouse way faster for results so I will always request that vs trusting lipase and amylase from what I have seen with all i went through with dex. I just do not think amylase and lipase are real accurate for pancreatitis.

I have been giving the VSL off and on since the begining of the year. I also have the DD Plus that you recomended and have been giving that the past 2 nights, as I got scared the VSL (since I bought the flavored one) may upset them.

ok as was wondering if maybe that triggered it -- darn i hope you figure out what caused this and it goes away quick. green beans and pumpkin are good fiber to clear her out too.

I have no way of knowing, because I don't know how sensitive Roxy is. Having had two yorkies that had issues with their stomachs some time during their lifetimes, I know how painful it can be. I wonder if Roxy had anxiety with you being away. That stress could have added to an already upset stomach. It sounds like more than gas to me, but the gas alone is painful and can last for a few days. The pain you described sounds more than gas, though. I would probably try baby gas-x if you think she is having trouble with her stomach or 1/4 tablet of the adult mint pill. That was the dose my veterinarian suggested I give Ashley. I also gave her 1/4 tablet of Pepcid when her stomach was upset. My veterinarian is very careful with medication, so I don't think they will harm Roxy in any way if you need to give them to her. These might make her more comfortable until you can take her to the doctor. An injection of Pepcid is often given when there is an upset stomach when a dog is ill. Good luck with Roxy. I hope she is back to herself soon.

At the vet now, waiting for spec cpl results. Gave her some sucralfare and will give her famotidine at home.

Her liapase was 725 not too out of range. Last year it was 590

this vet thinks it's arthritis from her lp and suggests metcamp, but I am holding off to see if this is stomach/gas, etc

any thoughts?

well you know my response on the metacam lol NO WAY - tramadol is what I would do. With LP issue she would be lifting her leg though - is she doing that?

is she still not feeling well if not I am not sure again this is gas as this has been a while now

sulcrulfate is pepto bismal for dogs as it does not have the aspirin in it. FAmotidine is good to control stomach acids. dex was given both when he had pancreatitis

M has anti immflam in it. T doesn't it only is a pain killer, so vet said would mask it...

She has been perfect, until this morning, she was stiff, wobbly, soft walking around. Same as I saw her walk last week. Tj wanted to play with her and she would try to play back, but she wasn't normal. An hour later she pooped and her stiff wooble walk got 50% better, but I could see she was still bothered, so I got ready quick and here we are at the vet again
