| Bortedella vaccine side effects? Hello fellow yt friends. I had a question about the botedella vaccine and it's side effects. I just got my new baby Jameson a little over 2 weeks ago. Jameson had developed a sneeze since I've had him that the vet said was allergies and nothing to worry about, possibly the change in the air/enviornment (he moved from Dallas to Boston). The vet gave Jameson his bortedella vaccine on 6/2 and 5 days later 6/7 Jameson has developed a cough. I know that coughing can be a side effect of the vaccine, but is it normal for the side effect to start 5 days later rather than immediately? I'm in wicked mom mode and am worried it could be something more serious than a side effect since it started 5 days later. Other than the sneezing/coughing he's completely normal. He's energetic, playful, eats normal, poops normal, etc. I also want to mention that I'm also in the process of changing his food from Royal Canine to Blue Buffalo (not sure if that might be a factor in anything). Thanks in advance for all your comments/help. Signed, Worried new mom.

| The vaccine could have given him bordatello it wouldnt be the 1st time Ive heard of that happening on here. Was it the nasal or injection? Bordatello has an incubation period so that could be why the delay.

| Thats what I thought. It more commonly happens with the nasal version. I dont even get the bordatello for My yorkies. If I ever board them I will. Its not a core vaccine so they really dont have to have it.

Granted it isn't a core vaccine, however, if you take your pup to be groomed and/or out in public, it's better to err on the side of caution. While kennel cough needs to run it's course, there is always a chance of the development of pnuemonia.

| Since I show, and my dogs are taken out in public....I leave nothing to chance. Once their showing career is over I only vaccinate with those vaccinations that are required by law. I've seen too many dogs develop kennel cough only to be lost to pneumonia.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I can definitely see why show dogs would want to have the Bordetella shot, they are exposed to lots of other dogs. My vet told me that if Joey ever needed to be hospitalized, and didn't have the Bordetella, there might be a problem, so it should be taken on a case by case basic, depending on your lifestyle, and the health and age of your dogs.

And one must remember that if you have more than one dog, and a dog aquires kennel cough, it does spread through all your dogs like wildfire; vaccinated or not. The vaccination does keep symptoms down to a minimum.

| Both of ours get the required shots and the Bordetella as both are out quite a bit. Carlo is boarded when we vacation at his trainers, and Max goes to our daughters house and she has 2 dogs. Never had a problem, but we make sure Maxine does not get all shots the same time....Carlo gets all at once. |

| Hey everyone, I just wanted to give a quick update on Jameson. I took him into the vet this morning since she said she didn't think the cough could be a reaction to the vaccine and wanted to listen to his lungs. Turns out he has a respitory infection and was a little dehydrated. He received fluids through an IV and has to be on antibiotics for the next 3 weeks. Other than his cough, he's his normal self. She thinks he may have developed the virus while he was traveling to me. Hopefully these antibiotics work and he's completely back to his healthy normal self.
