also the glazed over look what did vet say about that one? Just to compare dd had bats of 73, 54 and went down to 26 on low protein diet of 18% She never had any glazed over looks and she had high protein alot prior to diagnosis as we fed protein treats by real meat and we fed raw diet for 6 months.

I just want you to have something to compare it to. Usually the mvd dogs having symptoms are closer to the 100 range as their liver is not processing as well as a dog with lower bats.

Also on the long walk usually they pant alot and lay down legs do not really give out as we made that mistake walking ours too long and it was all three and they just layed down and we had to carry them. Was she panting alot?

I would probably eliminate walks and see if this happens again without walks and lower protein as you want to make sure nothing else is going on to be safe.
She was panting; both of them were panting though my Westie could easily have gone another mile. I was sweating myself. There is a dog water fountain there but neither of them would drink out of it.

I'm going to get the NB Vegetarian tonight and some cod or sweet potatoes or something I can put on her food that is not turkey, lamb, or definitely not beef and keep a very close eye on her and keep her in the air conditioning. Frankly, she could care less about the walks; she would rather you throw a ball for her but she pitches a fit to go cause she can't stand Ringo getting to do something she's not! You should see her biting his ankles if I go to put his harness on; she can't stand it.

If I see one wobbly leg; she's going to be seen somewhere by someone if my regular Vet won't see her.

Thanks for your help and support; I'll try to pass it on to someone else in need this evening.

Good plan

Just to also make you aware of why i want you to keep an eye on her. My friend has a maltese and her dog started having back legs go out on her so my friend took her to ER over the weekend. They said it is probably just a disc issue and gave her metacam. Within a few months she had GME and seizures etc so her dog was misdiagnosed by ER as it was not a disc issue and had they diagnosed properly upfront they would have been able to treat sooner. She started having seizures after the legs going out incidents within a couple months. This is why i want you to keep an eye on her because the glazed look is seizure behavior and legs going out i am still concerned since it happened at home in your bedroom as well as walk. If just on walk then I would buy it but since one other time than walk i would be on the watch with mine.

Sorry to be paranoid but better to be aware in case it happens again

also shaking is a sign of pain as well

I'll keep an eye on her - she likes the Natural Balance Vegetarian! I gave her 3 pieces and she ate them all. I got some vegetarian canned too - and some whitefish/sweet potato canned as well in case I don't get back out for the Cod.

He states that she can not walk as long as my Westie in this heat; she is too small; and to let her rest today and keep an eye on her.

Of course, no more beef - though he thinks these could be two separate incidents.

Keep an eye on her today; take her for a short walk tomorrow evening; monitor her during the walk and call him immediately for a blood glucose test if there is further weakness.

That's it.

Lordy. Sometimes I learn more here. I'll do the diet change on my own. I hope he knows what he's talking about. I will say he's taken excellent care of all my dogs and assures me he takes care of several liver dogs.

I'm going to see if we have any internists around here. I live in WV so I am doubtful.

Good news is - we are moving to Ohio and will be right by OSU if I need a specialist.
That is really great news! I'm so glad that you stayed calm and focused while listening to your vet! That is why they attend Veterinary School. If it was really warm out I could see that a drop in blood sugar would have caused what happened. Your are such a good momma to your Lucy.

Thanks you guys; you are so sweet!

As it turns out, she hates the NB Vegetarian canned; but does like the dry . . so at least that's a start in the right direction. I'll have to find some different toppings like the cod . . maybe some egg.

I'm watching her like a hawk . . . no walks for her tonight. Ringo will be happy if he gets to go alone!

I do have nagging feeling . . like maybe the vet blew me off . . so I'll definitely watch her closely. So far - so good.

Honestly, I don't think a vet would do that. Sometimes we can make more of things than they are...BUT sometimes our gut instinct is right. Only think you can do now is watch her carefully...which I DO know you will do. She is lucky to have you as her mommy!

You know...since she likes to go out with Ringo but does not really care to walk, maybe a stroller would be nice? Or a sling that you could put her in? Just a thought.

He may not have blown you off persay. Sometimes vets just think owners are overreacting or whatever and just like to wait things out. And he could be absolutely right.

That said, if you have a nagging gut feeling about something, then it is okay to listen to it in this case. You know her best. Right now, maybe all you need to do is watch her. But the gut feeling of an owner shouldn't be ignored.

I happen to have a similar feeling in this case. Not saying there is something very wrong, but it isn't something I'd take too lightly either...

The vegetarian food is AAFCO approved if I remember right, so it's fine; but it is a very different kind of protein than she is used to. Not all dogs seem to do great on it. So just make sure she is thriving on it. Maybe if she does really well you'll be able to add in some liver friendly protein.

Did you try to put it into the microwave to warm it a little? That might make her really like it.

make sure if doing eggs to do egg white only and not too much just enough to entice eating as you do not want to over due it with protein. I personally like the cod better - my demi goes nuts for it so it really entices the eating but i just do a little bit to get her to eat the kibble

You know, I thought about that. I gave her some extra play time out in the yard to make up for the walk but might have to find a stroller or sling. She had such a good evening; I almost took her because it was just a short one; but decided to leave well enough alone for tonight.

I hope this food agrees with her and we have no more incidents. She was a bundle of energy this evening, I'll say! Almost 10:00 pm and still going strong.

I just hope this vet is right. Well, I'm off all week-end so will be able to spend lots of time with her and see how she does.

We were going to take them hiking this week-end . . . maybe I will have to find that sling.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. I'll keep it all in mind; the food changes; possible neuro issues to look for . . .There is just something about this little girl; she stole my heart and I want her to have just the perfect life.
