Donating YT 500 Club Member | Bridget has grade 2 luxating patella - advise appreciated When I got home from work Friday evening - I noticed Bridget favoring her rear left leg. Of course I freaked and called the vet on Saturday and got her right in. The vet felt her knees and felt that the knee was swollen, but that nothing was broken and thought that x-rays at this point was not necessary. Gave me pain/anti-inflammatory meds and asked me to call her in a few days if not better. Yesterday I felt I wanted to have x-rays done so I scheduled them for this morning...better safe than sorry. I just heard back and was told her knee is swollen - probably from an injury (which I don't know what happened), and she has a grade 2 luxating patella. If I understand correctly (which I may not as my head was spinning) the swelling is causing the knee to not be able to go back into the socket correctly - but will once the swelling goes down. She is prescribing a low dose pain/anti-inflammatory med, and wants to see her back in about 2 weeks to see how she is doing. She said at that point we'd see what if anything needs to be done. I had the vet check her knees last month when she was spayed and they felt there was no issues. Did her injuring her knee bring this to the surface? I guess I'm looking for any kind of comments to help me understand what exactly this means. Bridget is 9 months old. Since she is so young - am I to assume this will get worse? Do some remain at grades and never get worse? Should her activity be restricted (besides no jumping on and off furniture)? She likes to be up on the bed and couch with us - which is better - ramp or steps? Sorry for all the questions - but everyone here is so helpful and understanding and I really value all your advise as most have real life knowledge - not just textbook. I love our vet, but sometimes time is limited and I don't think of all the questions when I should. Thanks in advance for any information - it's really appreciated!

| Hi Donna, Hot Rod had lp surgery for his lp last year. He went from a grade 1 to a 4 in a matter of months. --not to say that is normal-- lp is when the groove of the knee cap is not deep enough and the knee slips out. some surgeries are to just deepen the groove while others, if needed, have pins put in to keep the knees in place. Hot Rod's ligament was off to the side and as a result of all of his issues, his leg was bowing out. lp doesn't mean surgery all the time. Maggie May was just diagnosed with low grade 2 lp and if the vet had not found it, we would have never known! She has no issues or shows any pain whatsoever. Thankfully! She recently had a dental done so the vet was able to manipulate the knee and determined that surgery was not necessary. Yay! I have read on here that there are other dogs that are older and have lp with no issues. did you and your vet discuss supplements? We use Dasuquin. a lot of people use Cosequin. As in humans, it is good or joint health. Stairs or ramps are good. I would lean towards a ramp as it is the motion of "spinging up" is what you want to control. Hot Rod goes up and down the stairs I have for him perfectly fine but he's had the surgery and actually the vet has told us to have him sit/stand up slowly to building the knee/muscles up. I would try and restrict Bridget's jumping until the swelling goes down, have her rechecked. Was se exhibiting any signs of this prior to the injury? The injury coud have cause it or the lp could have been an issue which cause her to injure herself, so there is no definitive answer, sorry. Hope this helps. Best of luck and give Bridget hugs and kisses from me.

Good information to have when I finally meet with her. Stairs or ramps are good. I would lean towards a ramp as it is the motion of "spinging up" is what you want to control. A month ago - when she was checked it seemed fine. She still is trying to run around like a nut...it's so hard to keep her still. Hope this helps. You always help - I don't think I've ever read a response that you've given that wasn't helpful or supportive. Thanks so much!!! And I'm sure I've messed up this entire reply (have not yet learned how to quote parts of a post)Best of luck and give Bridget hugs and kisses from me.

| Im sorry about the bad news... its always hard when we hear something like this about our babies.. Peanut has grade 1 in his left and grade 2 in his right, he is on Cosequin. He has been on it for about 5 months and he hardly limps at all!! The vet said as long as I keep him on the Cosequin and keep his weight at where he is at now I wont have to put him through Sx.

| Sometimes they will aggravate their knees by jumping off of furniture. Many times if you rest that knee and give them anti inflammatories, the joint will be fine within a week or two. Sounds like a soft tissue injury. Honestly, vets do not need to xray a knee to grade it. I recently had a pup (he has LP) fall ..yes fall, off of my bed onto a tile floor. He was limping and crying and I immediately took him to the EC. By the time I got there he was trying to walk on it. They examined him and gave him anti inflammatories. I was still concerned the next day and took him to my vet who basically said the same thing. He limped off and on for about a week...when he ran....then he was fine again! It is very important that you keep her quiet while her knee is inflammed to give it time to heal. Do you have steps or a ramp to keep her from jumping up on furniture? It is a good idea to train her now not to jump up and off of furniture!

| Awww, that you Donna that is very sweet of you to say. Let us know how Bridget does. I think she'll be fine after a while...just keeping her from running and jumping is going to be the hard part. lol Hugs!

| Uni was diagnosed with grade 3, however, she has only lifted her leg once in her entire life. i have her on cosequin, and even though she is hyper active, I try to limit her jumping by using steps. I do not see surgery in her future unless she gets considerably worse. btw, I personally think Uni is a grade 2, but her vet said 3.

| No disrespect to your vet, but it should not have taken an xray to find LP. Yes, it is hard to keep them quiet. I guess the main thing is to make sure she does not jump on or off of furniture.

I suppose it could have escalated quickly, but that is not the norm imo. Besides, the way you have said this happened, she did not know that Bridget even had LP now until she did the xray. Makes zero sense to me!
