| is Spay wound infected? Help Okay so Mee-kah was spayed on saturday. She has a little piece of the wound on top that is bleeding a little. It looks like a little dry drop and its gotten a bit red. Nothing Major, i dont think. but she wont leave the Elizabeth cone on. She has been licking it where i have cought her with out the cone. Her spay was in heat. She was in her first heat and it had already been over a month a half and she was still full force in heat when i took her in. They prescribed her with amoxixilin twice a day when they sent her home. Should i be worried? Or should she be okay? Please advice.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Put that cone back on and leave it there! she is going to make it infected by licking at it. i wouldn't be worried about a dried drop of blood but it is getting all red and irritated because she has gotten to it. She can open up the incision if she is allowed to lick it. please just put the cone back on. I know they don't like it but its for their own good. you can thread her collar through it if she keeps sliding it off her head this way she won't be able to do that anymore.

| Yes...I agree. I went through that with Lily. I adopted her the day after her spay and by that night her incision opened up. I would hate for you and your baby to go through that. Put that cone back on....I never took it off her until she was healed.

| What a good idea, the baby onsies. I'll have to remember this when I have Charlie neutered in a couple of months. I don't know how he'll take to the cone.

As far as infection, hopefully the antibiotic will cover it if it is infected. But watch for any redness that spreads or if it looks like it has any pus oozing out of it. |

| I agree with Kellie. Onesies are fine for some dogs (some try to bite through them), but only if your vet approves it. They can rub on the incision and not all vets agree that this is okay. Because she got to the incision, redness wouldn't be surprising. However, if you have any concern about the way it looks or feels, you vet should look at it. We actually had to have Ellie's looked at twice.

| I'd have the vet look at it. My Emma had a c-section and I had to take her back to the vet 3 times.... she kept developing red areas. It ended up she was having a reaction to the thread they used ... they had to pull it out.... She is all better now. Evidently there are two types of thread they use... they marked her chart to use the "other" kind in the future. Hope your little one heals up soon!!

| okay so i did put her cone back on as soon as i got the first response form this forum. She has it on at home now and i left her in my masted bathroom, and left my Sharpie (which was neutered yesturday) in my guest bathroom because it is alot smaller. They should be okay like this. I will keep her cone on. If the red does not reduce by the time i get home from work i am calling the vet. But i do think it was cause of her licking. She kepts bumping her cone against every door, wall and piece of floor she could Poor baby.
