| Dry Hacking and wheezing/coughing My dog Bentley(4 months old) has been dry hacking/coughing at night and it seems like he's trying to get something out of his throat or somethings caught in it. After he does that two or three times he lays back down to go to sleep and probably an hour later he will do it again. Or he will wake up and walk around and sounds like he is wheezing. I brought him to the vet to get an Xray to see if he had a collapse trachea and she told me she can't tell and that she has only seen that twice in her whole career. Does anyone know whats wrong with him? PLEASE HELP! I feel so bad like I can't do anything! |

| What ? a vet that's only seen collapsed trachea 2 times in her whole career. Sounds like she doesn't know much about small dogs to me. I would find a new vet. Does your baby do this during the day as well or only at night while sleeping ? It could be respiratory related or possible reflux either way it needs to be addressed promptly and properly. |

| I would not wait too long, if respiratory it could go into pneumonia quickly. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Those symptoms sound like kennel cough. It's a cough that ends with a hack and is generally worse at nightime. Your vet should put him on antibiotic as a preventative against pneumonia. Using a steam mist vaporizer will ease the coughing and congestion. If you don't own one of those...you can take him into a steam filled bathroom.

| Well no one is responding yet. I wouldn't wait just pick one and go. I'd be willing to bet any other vet would do more than your last one. I agree about Kennel Cough and that turns to pneumonia fast left untreated. So start calling and take whoever can see him fastest, pref Today. Last edited by lillymae; 03-08-2010 at 09:15 AM. |

Just so you know....a collapsed trachea makes the pup sound like a goose...they have a honking noise for a cough. There is a thread that describes it. I will look for it.

| Bailey did this too for a little while and it was random, but it wasn't just at night AND it only last 3 or 4 days and not every hour. It went away. I think he had a "hairball" or something stuck in his throat that he was trying to get out. Collapsed trachea which i've also dealt with is much more brutal sounding like they're trying to catch their breathe and can't breathe. At any rate I would give lots of water and try a different vet! If this vet isn't experienced on collapsed treach's that would scare me (only because i've lost two yorkies to it). Good luck!
