| New Puppy Not Eating or Drinking Hi everyone, I am new here, and I just brought home my new baby girl today. She is understandably very scared and confused, and got sick in the car on the way home (the cabbie was driving like a maniac), but she won't eat or drink anything and I am starting to get worried. She is 11.5 weeks old and very tiny (maybe 1.5-2 pounds - I'm not exactly sure, but she has a vet appt tomorrow so I will find out then). I know yorkie puppies can become hypoglycemic very quickly, especially the really small ones, so I am feeling more and more anxious the longer she goes without eating. She has been mostly just sleeping since I got her home, huddled up in a corner of her bed or on a blanket. I've tried giving her nutri-cal by putting it on the roof of her mouth, which has worked to an extent, but since she is so small it's difficult to get a good amount in there. She hasn't played or eliminated since I got her home either (about 1:30PM today). I guess I am just concerned and want her to be okay - has anyone else encountered this situation with a brand new puppy? I know it's only been a few hours, but I really want her to eat and drink to keep her blood sugar from dropping. How often should I force the nutri-cal? Should I wake her up from her sleep to give it to her, or just let her sleep? Sorry if any of this sounds naive, I am new and just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can so that my new baby girl is healthy & happy. Any advice and/or words of encouragement would be much appreciated. Thank you! |

| Hi there Congrats on your new baby! It is very normal for them to be scared and not want to eat the first day bringing her home. But, you are right to be worried since she is so tiny. I would try giving her some can food with a little kero syrup on it. You could also make her up some formula out of goats mik or evaporated milk. Half milk halk water you can also squirt a little kero syrup in it. As long as she has heat and energy she will be okay. Just keep giving her that Nuri cal and try to give her what ever you can that you think she might like and give her a little time to adjust I am sure she will be fine. |

| Congrats on you new puppy! It sounds like she had car sickness, hopefully she'll come around. Check her gums & if they look pale, it means her sugar level is low. I've heard that rubbing nutri-cal on their gum line helps absorb it faster. I think she should get some food in her stomach. Boil some plain chicken breast & white rice mixed w/little bit of kibble. Can be moistened in the chicken water, always works the best for us. Some give baby cereal or baby food.

| Do not worry! My 2 furbabies did the same thing. They are scared and confused. I would try a treat such as a tiny part of a treat and hold them close and secure for security! Good luck!

| Update: After the last nutri-cal serving at around 4:45, she seemed to get a burst of energy and has been up playing ever since! She is drinking her water and eating a bit of her food (but mostly treats). I'm okay w/ giving her treats for now as long as she is eating something! I just put her wet food down and she's smelling it but not eating it...I'm hoping it's just because she's all wound up from playing and doesn't feel like eating a meal at the moment. She also peed and pooed on her wee wee pad! Thanks everyone for the responses, all great advice! |

| Baby food I always keep jars of chicken or turkey baby food for a puppy that doesn't want to eat. When they won't eat anything else they will eat it. You may want to get them started by putting some on your finger and letting them lick it off. With a new puppy , just keep a jar on hand, then if they don't eat you can feed it to them. Don't use the jar of baby food unless they are not eating their kibble, because they will like it better and not want to go back to their kibble after having the baby food. |
