| Liver Shunts & Yorkies? Has anyone had issues with this? I am not certain that my yorkie has one but he is going in for a technetium scan and I am a little worried. Are there any side effect from having a technetium scan? Any feedback is appreciated! |

| Hi sweetie, Hope you don't have to deal with liver shunt. You can post your questions here about it and get more answers: Sick & Injured / Emergencies Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community You can also do a search for liver shunt in that section and I think you'll find lots of information to help you.

| technisian scan Quote:
The vet told me it is called a technisian scan. They will keep him over night and they will have him swallow this radioactive liquid so they can do the scan to see where it goes and to see if he has a liver shunt. I am trying to find someone who has gone thru this with their yorkie or that know anything about. it.

| He should be just fine, but whenever anesthesia is involved, there is no way to know for sure. The more common name for this is scintigraphy. You will likely get many results if you search for it on YT. A few peple here have been through this. My girl is liver compromised (post BAT of 106 once), but her ultrasound (not very accurate) came back okay, she is older, and she doesn't have neurologic symptoms, I opted against going any further with testing.

| I am sorry that you are going through this, I know that every test is scary, it is nice to know answers... I really hate the testing and not knowing. The test you are having done is not very invasive at all, I have not personally heard of any of them having side effects from it, Copper had his done with no problem. Sending warm thoughts to you and your little one.

| The possibility of a liver shunt came about when we took him in for blood work before getting him fixed to make sure everything was normal. The blood came back fine expect for his bio chemistrys which were very high (over 105) so I vet spoke with us and told us different options and recommended further testing at UCD for a possible liver shiny. We then read all the symptoms and signs online and he did not have any. The only thing is he is small he is year and 3 months old and weighs 3 lbs but we just thought he is small. So we then took him from UCD and he had several test done. He had one blood test before he ate in a empty stomach then they fed him and after some time to let his food digest they took a second blood test. His first blood test showed his bio chemistrys very HIGH. His second blood test after he was giving food came out normal. They also did a ultra sound and that looked normal. The vet brought a liver shunt specialist in and he said that he doesn't think their isn't a shunt. But they didn't know why his bio chemistrys were high. So that was a very long day at UCD for all of us. They wanted us to leave him that night to do the technisian scan but we said no because he had so much anxiety already we didn't want to put him thru more stress. So now I am trying to figure what I should do an also get feed back from people who are fimiliar with this. So that is where I am now. I started my female yorkie on a raw diet and I scared to get Jim started on it because I am not sure if he can or cannot handle it. It's just so tough not knowing. |

the alt can be high from meds, excessive exercise, toxins. Due to him being small like that is one sign as many times the tinies are prone to liver shunt but the tinies with shunts have hypoglycemic attacks and are usually very picky eaters and they get spaced out after eating or have seizures after eating or they walk along with walls of the house. Have you seen any of this? Was your dog on any meds before this blood work was done? Last edited by dwerten; 02-26-2010 at 09:19 PM.
