| Bad landing after jump ... =/ Yesterday evening my 5 month baby Milo was jumping and trying to grab something from the counter and when he landed and I looked at him he was sitting kind of sideways so I picked him up and set him on all fours and realized he wasn't putting pressure on his back right leg. He didn't cry or whine at all so I figured we'd refrain him from playing or running for the rest of the evening. We've touched his leg and moved it and he doesn't react in pain to any of it and he can also stretch his leg he just refrains from putting any pressure on it. This morning he seemed the same. Before I go to the vet I was wondering if this is something that rest and a few days away from running and playing can make better. I hate to see Milo like this and knowing that he wants to play and run soo badly but I can't allow him in fear of him getting worse =(

| Welcome to YT!! I wish I had advice to give. As fragile as our babies are, I would think I would rather be safe than sorry. I know others will have great advice to give though.

| Yes I think you should bring him to the vet. It's already been a day and also it the rear leg, yorkies have a week knee, I forgot the name of the condition. |

| this has happened to both my maltese and yorkie - rest it for 48-72 hrs and pain will make them rest - pain meds they will walk on it and take longer to heal and vet will give pain meds usually nsaid like metacam or tramadol - i prefer tramadol. I doubt your dog broke it's leg and if patella is out of joint gently massage knee cap and see if it slides back in place. if a ruptured acl like we believe happened to my girl yorkie then 2 mos of rest and scar tissue will create a tendon in small dogs - this can be repaired later not an emergency surgery if this is what happened and vet and ortho recommended 2 mos rest then if still lifting and in pain surgery but 80% of small dogs do not need acl surgery keep confined, no jumping etc and NO EXERCISE give it time to heal My maltese was fine with in 3-4 days as soft tissue injury and my yorkie it took a while - only about 4-5 days to not lift but she would lift off and on and get up slow for a while but she cried out in pain when it initially happened and my maltese i was not home so not sure what happened came in and she was lifting front paw - my dd it was back leg Last edited by dwerten; 02-01-2010 at 07:30 AM. |

| I always go for my vet's opinion when I question the health of one of my babies. Let us know how it goes. ~Joanne~

| Good Morning! Thank you all for your concern and great advice! After 5 days of non jumping and walking activities I'm glad to report that Milo is doing great! Now I am working on him not jumping on or off from the sofa and bed to prevent any injuries!

| Could've been a sprain, but look for luxatting patella disease where the kneecaps slip.

I agree. I have seen people say that you should let them go for two or three days and see if it gets better. While it may get better....is it fair to leave them in pain while you are looking to avoid a vet bill? I don't think so. I know that most people would take themselves to a doctor if they injured themselves and were in pain. Many of them would take pain pills. So, why treat our pups differently? We do not know what is wrong and cannot feel their pain; nor can we diagnose. I do not play with anything like that. Maybe it is not an emergency, but pain is not pleasant. As for the theory that pain is good for them, I say let the person who says that live with the pain for a day or two. If a dog is showing pain, it is in real pain. They are masters at hiding their pain. And, as for the theory that pain will prevent them from jumping....WE can prevent them from jumping. Leaving a dog in pain is not kind imho. Keep us posted...I hope your baby is ok!

| Well, I missed the post that the pup was ok...and did not look at the dates. But, the post is still valid and informational for anyone worried about a yorkie who appears to be injured. I am glad the OPs pup is fine!

| fyi pain meds are not without their risks as well so rushing to use pain meds is not always the answer and no i would not go to the doctor to get pain meds if i sprained my ankle. I try to not take meds unless absolutely necessary same with my dogs as my dog was very sick for months after taking metacam so i will avoid nsaids like the plague with my dogs after what i saw it do to mine and will only use narcotics like tramadol for pain if necessary. I think far too many vets rush to medicate these dogs and then something else happens much worse than a little pain and rest here is a link of what pain meds can do to dogs so BE AWARE Advice to Dog Owners Whose Pets Take NSAIDs and very rarely do vets do blood work before giving these drugs which is very important before administering these Last edited by dwerten; 02-09-2010 at 03:05 PM. |
