are you trimming her hair or pulling up in a top knot? The safest thing to use per opthamologist for eyes is saline solution but are you sure this is not squinting related to what is going on right now? Is she squinting or rubbing her eye on carpet or scratching at eye? I would first take warm water on a wash cloth, cotton pad and wipe eyes and make sure no hair going in and if so cut it back - if she is rubbing or scratching at it put a cone on so she does not scratch her eye as that can be another issue to deal with. let me know more on the eye what is going on |
do they have a board certified neurlogist on staff? William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital i have to email dentist from home as have it on home email |
ok i just called our bc dentist and he did his residency there and it is DR KNIPE you want to see there if you go to ucdavis and he said she is good William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital |
ok so i just called and it is $2500 for an mri there and a student does it with the neurologist over seeing them so that will be your call. I would be adimant you want her below and see what your vet can do but she will not do the work she oversees them. So you need to decide whether you want student doing it or a bc neurologist doing it and pay a little more and if you are going to do the mri you probably want that spinal tap done at same time but discuss with them that way you do not have to put her under more than once if they put her under hoping the best for your little one and again so sorry you are going through all this :( |
I called UCdavis and talked to the internal med person regarding getting Bella in. She said that a liver shunt could cause neuro symptoms also and the consult is $103 and $270 for an ultrasound. I figured we can start with that and see where that takes us. I can't believe the MRI is $2500 for students to do it. That's way expensive for "learning" students. If it comes down to having to see the neurologist, I'll rather take Bella to Roseville, CA for $2700 (including spinal tap). We're seeing Dr. Queen in internal medicine on Monday. |
Also, with her eye..I've actually seen a tiny piece of hair stuck in her eye and I couldn't get it out. It wasn't that it was just poking her but it was actually in there. I clip her up with a little clip but she has tiny hair that falls out. |

u/s is only 60 percent accurate in seeing a shunt and the person reading it has to be really really skilled. You will not see MVD on a u/s. The only good thing is it can show the shape and size of the liver and if there are any bladder stones, but other than that, I am almost positive you will still be left with un answered questions. Have you joined Olgas yahoo group yet? |
I just spoke to my friend whose dog had AAI and explained the head tilt. They had her running around doing scintigraphies for shunt etc and her baby was below 100 also and turns out all along AAI - she agreed neurological as i wanted to call her as she has alot of experience with neurological since her dog had this and went to neurologist here in so cal. She said they first did xray then mri and spinal tap. She sad the neurologists are so good at knowing this stuff before they even do testing they will know what is going on and I agree - just stinks it is so far away. |
her dog starting showing the neurological signs of head tilt at age 2 as i asked her the age of shiva |
I'm actually going to call my vet tomorrow to refer me to the place in Roseville for the neuro. She recommended seeing internal medicine because of the liver shunt but I'll ask to be recommended for the head tilt. |

Something just happened to Bella and I'm not sure what it was. My back was turned to her and the husband was facing her. Bella was on the carpet walking and I heard her crying and when I turned to look, she was on the carpet (on her belly). The husband said he saw he lay down, no shaking or anything. I thought it could be a seizure but he said he didn't see her shake. What could have happened? |

is her belly swollen? is she eating, pooping, peeing otherwise acting normal and drinking? |

her eating is fine, no swollen belly, her pooping is more often now and more watery from the lactalous. She hasn't been drinking and her acting has been the same since her head tilt. |
yeah get her in and do me a favor call dr centers tomorrow please she consults i believe for free as if this were mine due to mine having similar bile acids with no issues like this I would question being on clavamox and lactulose is really necessary at this point as she needs to be drinking water and sounds like your vet is not real up on liver issues :( and sounds like she has declined since being on those three things - could be coincidence but not sure she really needs that stuff right now. I think she is going to need steroids more and if she did have a seizure just now that should not have happenedon lactulose and clavamox as those should be detoxing her so why i really feel this is neurological but needed liver shunt ruled out with bile acids and now that those are low i feel that is ruled out at this point :( I really feel the neurologist is going to know exactly what is going on with her did your vet ever xray her to make sure nothing spinal, etc? If not do not let her at this point just wanted to know if she checked that - if not just have specialist do it all you need to get this diagnosed and quickly |
I'm sorry your little Bella is going through this. I will continue to keep her in my prayers! :hands::hands: |
|
just want to confirm she has never fallen that you are aware of prior to this head tilt? |
Thinking about you guys and praying. It must be so hard to see your baby going through this. Prayers every minute for you both. Dwerten, you are such a caring person. I always see you go above and beyond to help out everyone in need here. God bless you. You, I'm sure, save lifes and bring so much comfort to owners going through such scary experiences. Thanx bor being here. xo |

I cannot wait for bella to get a firm diagnosis and be a happy pupster again :) |
Yeah I know, thanks so much Dwerten! You've been such a great help and I wouldn't know how to deal with all this if it wasn't for you and everyone else helping me through this. I called the neuro place today and they're all booked this week so we're going in on Monday. I was so bummed since I wanted her seen asap but Monday will do. I will keep you all posted. |
Sending prayer's for your baby and hope things work out for her. Sorry you have to wait but finger's crossed the wait will be worth it. Hugs, |
In the meantime, please keep her calm. I know that AAI was mentioned and that could be a strong possiblity as well. Have you read about it yet: Atlantoaxial Instability (Luxation) |

i really do not think AAI as she is not crying out in pain and those dogs have alot of pain in neck and have to be braced but it is definitely something neurological and i think they will put your little one on steroids so if they recommend steroids due to liver issue ask about prednisolone vs prednisone as prednisolone is broken down prednisone so the liver does not have to work as hard to break it down and with liver issue you want to do the prednisolone |
Quote:
Great Advice! Yeah the prednisolone is best for liver issue dog. ...I really hope Bella gets well soon. I can only imagine how scarey this all is :( |
I feel like there's so much going on. I've noticed Bella's head is really thinning out and there's now alot of baby hair on her head. Sometimes I find small chunks of her hair around the house and this has never happened before. Is there any reasons for hair loss? |
