I need help! Bella's been hitting her head at table corners or any corners around the house. At first I thought it was funny and that she was being clumsy but now I think it might have been the beginning of my worries now. Since yesterday, I've noticed that every time I touch her right side, she'll kind of sit and lend against that side, sort of a way of protecting herself from me touching her. I've also noticed that she's been looking up a lot and tilting her head to the right now. Something's also weird with her walking also, she'll walk straight but her behind would be tilted to the left as she walks. The thing is, she was home by herself for most of the day yesterday so I'm not sure what could have happened...like a seizure of something. I'm afriad it's some brain problems and I'm worried sick. I'm planning on calling the vet on Monday but I would like some input or anything I could ask the vet about. Thanks! |

sounds neurological to me- it could be AAI - they can get it from a fall and the pain is in the neck usually - I will post some links |
|
the other thing is liver shunt as they head press and walk in circles - this sounds more like what you are describing - what protein percentage are you feeding - Portosystemic Shunt (Hepatic Shunt) in Dogs If this was my dog i would get to vet and have cbc panel and bile acids done on monday to first see if liver shunt and then if not i would see a neurologist. I would go in on monday on a 12 hr fast and have them do the cbc panel and the pre-bile acid then bring food with you and do the post get that all done at same time so you can figure this out how old is your dog? if it is liver issue then hopefully vet will put your dog on hill's L/D ,give you lactulose as that will help with toxins and do milk thistle and sam-e or give you (denamrin which is milk thistle and sam-e combined) read those two links and see if either of these sounds like what is going on |
do you notice the symptoms of head pressing and circling after eating? |
Thank you so much for the information. Bella will be 2 yrs old in March. I've actually noticed Bella rubbing her head from side to side on the carpet every once and awhile but I've always thought it was her way of scratching her ears. She doesn't circle around and hasn't vomit or had diarrhea. Something really odd she just did though was when DH had a treat for her and told her to sit, she actually did it but had her back toward him. She's never done that before and it's super strange. Another thing is, she's always been good about getting up into the car when we go somewhere but earlier, when I told her "up" into the car, she was trying to hop up but kept falling sideways until DH picked her up there. |

Ok, so I know this is something completely different from what we had thought it could have been but do you think my Bella might be getting blind in her right eye? I'm wondering if that's why she's tilting her head to the right now (so her left eye can see straight), hitting corners, etc. Today I held some rice in my palm for her as "treat" because she loves rice. Anyways, she ate the portion more to her left eye and didn't seem to have seen the other portion. I also called my vet to leave a message about getting in to see them asap on Monday. I'm hoping they would check their messages in the a.m and call me back but I'll also call again in the morning to check. I'm so worried! |

Aww, how worriesome. I'll be praying for little Bella. xoxo |
Did you get Bella in to see the vet? Praying for a good report or at least a path forward to finding out what's going on. |

me too! :) |
Bella's update Update: Bella and I just got back from the vet. Her eye seems fine according to the vet so we got some blood work done to see if it's a neurological problem. She was having such a hard time letting the vet turn her on her right side. The vet listed a bunch of stuff that could be a problem but I'm hoping the blood work would show up something so I can get her treated and stop worrying about her. Another thing the vet had said was that it could have been toxin. We have been having ant problems in the house and have been using terro liquid drops for the ants. I'm afraid she had eaten some dead ants or the drops itself so I looked up the ant killer and it had said there wasn't enough toxin in there to harm a pet. Today Bella weighed in 6 lbs so I'm not sure how much toxin is too much for her. We'll get her blood work and fecal results tomorrow. I just want my baby to feel better. Its so hard for me to see her this way. |

I am glad you got her into your vet. Prayers for you and her....I hope you have an answer soon! |
Bella's blood work came in today and all her major organs seems too be fine. Her fecal sample however hasn't came in yet so they'll call me back for that. I'm still worried about her right eye. Vet says it looks fine but it seems like she can't see from that side especially because she's only eating from the left side and leaves the food on the right. Also, whenever I hold up a treat on the right side, she doesn't seem to notice at all until i switch to the left. Is there any other tests to determine if it's her eye. Vet says she's responding to light in the right eye and everything. |

I pray they will find out what is wrong with Bella and be able to treat her so she can recover and I pray for you too. |

Poor Bella, My prayers are with you! |
We're going back in tomorrow morning for a bile acid test and to recheck her eye. They said we might have to be refer to a specialist for a MRI. They also want to start her on some trail meds if I wanted to but I rather not have her on any meds yet just because we can't pin point what's really wrong with her. What do you all think? |
I don't know if this has been mentioned. I would not allow her free roam of the house when you're gone. Also, there are rubber bumper type edging that you can put on edges or foam rubber on areas she's bumping on to not make her worse. I does sound neurological. By now, I am supposing you've seen the vet. Any news? God bless you both and I hope it isn't anything really serious. |

I personally think you should listen to your vet. Someone online with no veterinary education should not diagnose your pup! Actually, a vet should not be online diagnosing because what a person tells the vet may not be totally accurate....the vet needs to SEE the pup. I would not trust anyone to diagnose my pup if they were not educated in veterinary medicine...and would not trust a vet who diagnosed without SEEING my pup. Please be careful about taking online advice! If you are uncomfortable with what your vet is recommending, get a second opinion....from another VET! |

I took Bella back to the vet today because she was suppose to do a bile acid test. When Bella's normal vet (a different person looked at her yesterday) looked at her, she decided there's something else going on and decided to cancel the bile acid test and send us home so she can look more into it. So then, she called us back today and said she thinks it could be inflammatory of the brain (possibly hydrocephalus?) but would still like to do a bile acid test just in case. So another trip to the vet tomorrow. I'm really hoping we figure something out soon. If nothing comes up, we'll be referred to a specialist 3.5 hours away to do a MRI and possible spinal tap totaling around $2700 (way more than I can afford right now) but I love my baby dearly and I have no clue on what to do. It's just that I'm afraid the specialist won't even be able to diagnose her with anything. :( Also, Bella's vet wants to start her on steroids and an antibiotic. |
I'm so sorry little Bella is going through this. I will keep her and you in my prayers. |

When I first got ZZ she fell down our basement steps head over butt, and hit her head a couple times on the way down. It knocked her out needless to say and after screaming and crying and trying to calm down she walked funny for 2 days (with a knot on her head) Kinda cute afterwards. My vet told me that they have very hard heads and their brain can "bounce" to that one side or the other and shake them up a little bit. He said in very small cases it can cause a neuro problem, in ZZ's case just the bump and funny walking for 2 days. I hope your case happens to turn out the same!!! Keep us updated!!! xoxo!!:animal-pa |
