I have an appointment with a dogie dermo the 29th, I found one through my local rescue league, they are in West Palm Beach, we will see then, I will not be posting until after the visit, but I will post all the news.

that is great let us know how it goes i think you will get more answers with dermatologist and faster diagnosis so worth the extra money

Just got back from the dogie dermo and the problem is DEMODECTIC MANGE, recovery is slow, but promising, they are doing blood work now to make sure the liver and other parts can handle the treatment, although we are starting one med and the shampoo, but must wait on the results of blood work to start the main treatment.

so has your dog had this since a pup? As demodex is from the mother dog and usually if they have this it is from the time they were a pup - it usually does not creep up later - it starts with a small spot and it is usually moist and stinky. It is due to the immune system being poor. This is a tough one to get rid of Many dogs have had great success with promeris but some get sick from it per our dermatologist. My friends dog has had this since a pup and she has had a horrible time of it but i have heard of many using promeris and it working real well. Usually they use ivermectin and that drug is very strong - make sure to have bile acids done along with cbc panel. Our vet made us do this before using atopica. NEVER EVER MIX IVERMECTIN AND KETOCONAZOLE - a dermatologist gave my friends dog this and she went into a coma and almost died those drugs SHOULD NEVER BE MIXED EVER - the ketoconazole breaks the blood barrier wall allowing the ivermectin to go to the brain and seizure then coma. I would not use a shampoo nor an internal ketoconazole on my dog taking this. Even if a shampoo it goes into the blood stream through the skin so please be careful as this dermatologist who has practiced for 20 plus years SCREWED UP BIG TIME and she apologized to my friend over and over and it was a 3,000 vet bill to save my friends dog.

if your dog walks in a drunken stupor AT ALL on this drug STOP IMMEDIATELY !!!! that is a sign of ivermectin toxicity. This drug is off label it is not approved by fda in dogs. I do not mean to scare you but you need to pay attention. My friends dog has been on a low dose of this stuff for years under one dermatologist but when she did not want to drive as far to my dermatologist she went to another one close to her that has practiced even longer than mine who is CONSERVATIVE and then this happened so she is back with mine and her dog is now on a daily small dose of interceptor as it has a different type of drug like ivermectin in it.

I just want to share this all with you as I would hate to not say anything and something happen to your dog as again my friends dog has been fine on it for years but demodex can be a nightmare to get rid of

here is what happens is the immune system is poor and every dog and human has mites on skin but when immune system is poor the mites take over and get out of balance and you get skin issues.

here is the link about promeris and i have to be honest if it were my dog i would try this first and if my dog got sick from this then i would go to ivermectin. It is newer but i have read great things on it working real well so ask derm about this. My friend is going to try this as well as i recommended it and i called our derm about it as well for her. My friends dog is perfectly healthy except for this demodex spot on her back but she only has one stinky moist spot on back not a bunch of scabs all over

Your wrong about dogs only getting mange as pups. My dog had it at 1 1/2 yrs old. My vet said all dogs have mites when a dogs imune system gets down they can multiply and cause mange

sorry not wrong it comes from mama dog read the links I posted and yes you are correct it is exacerbated by a poor immune system again from mama dog as dogs with a poor immune system cannot keep mites balanced in skin so they take over and then dog gets demodex. It is there though all along just gets worse if immune system keeps going down.

i would also consult a nutritionist about boosting the immune system that may help as well through diet and supplements - many on here like Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care

I believe it can be passed on by the mother dog. What I am saying is a dog can get it at any age since all dogs have mites

my dog has horrible allergies, suppressed immune system with temarilp for 2 years and horrible allergies since 6 months old and does not have demodex and never has and she is also hypothyroid as well which is a suppressed immune system disease. She does not have demodex so she would be a perfect candidate if it was soley on immune system and that was all it was based on so this comes from the mama dog and is transmitted to the babies sadly My friends dog has no allergies, no thyroid issues and has this and has had it since a pup and she is a puppy mill pup

the prob is people keep inbreeding the heck out of this breed and we end up with all these dogs with poor immune system issues like this just like if we inbred humans we would have major issues and these poor dogs and owners suffer
