Histoplasmosis in Dogs

Here's another article from Dr's Foster & Smith........it may explain about how Lola contracted it.

I was also informed that treating the yard with Lime could sweeten the soil against parasites....don't know if this rings true for fungus. The problem is that you have to keep the pets out of the area for a couple of days.....

Hello all, well what a heck of a morning. As you all may know my Lola has finally a diagnosis Histoplasmosis. This is a fungus they can get from the soil and breathing in spores. It is not contagious. This past April I planted a garden and bought about 8 bags of soil. I feel sure she got it from my garden since I dont spray for anything. I use only Holistic chemicals in my yard and home. We have never had fleas or ticks. I know my babies loved stomping thru my garden and eating tomatoes. I am more shocked that my others have no symptoms except XUXA has had 2 loose stools with blood but not much and nothing compared to Lola. I will give her a week then she will be tested. The treatment is very expensive. 20 mil just cost me $80 bucks but we will be getting refils at CVS for $60. She will be on Sporanox1.1 mil every day for 6 months. We will have to check her liver funtions in 7 days and then once a month. I also need to have her off the Predisone by this friday. It will make her worse. I feel very strong and will do everything in my power to keep this girl alive and well. Dr Cole diagnosed her on Friday after he saw that her Lymphs and Colon where swollen. The results from his Cytology came back this morning around 8AM and they called me right away. I have already given her a dose of this med. Please keep us in your prayer.

Histoplasmosis in Dogs

i would do the itro after what i saw happened to my friends dog on ketoconazole and if you use heartguard then i would definitely be careful and make sure there is no drug reaction with ivermectin and anti-fungal

so glad a firm diagnosis finally and sounds like it is right on from what i read on the link i posted makes sense. It says it can be from bird droppings or bats do you have alot of that near you? I think your other dogs were not affected as they have a better immune system and i think the steroids made it worse lowering the immune system sadly This is why my immune compromised dd who is on temarilp I am paranoid with as they can catch things much easier than a dog not on steroids or not having a poor immune system. I am so glad for you that they finally figured this out as i really did not think lymphangastasia based on her blood work being normal. I am sure she will be just fine now that they know what it is

After this is all cured i would supplement her with raw organic coconut oil and i would even ask vet about doing this along with drug as it is a natural anti-fungal and why it is used in shampoos, neosporin, etc as it is natural antibacterial and anti-fungal so please check into this and it is 1/4 tsp per 10lbs so you could start her on 1/8 daily and they love it my dd was on it for over a year no issues with blood work etc and she loved it and also did probiotics so i would ask vet about using those two natural supplements along with it as I will say I have been doubling up dd probiotics and only did clindamyacin 2 days and her staph infection is 100% better almost gone on her back which i was surprised and i think because i am using so much probiotic in her it is killing it that much faster.

Here is the coconut oil i use as a nutritionist did a lot of research and suppose to be purest form and comes in glass jar as that is suppose to also indicate the best quality if in glass jar

and here are the probiotics i use dds plus capsules - non-dairy as dogs are usually lactose intolerant

PROBIOTIC COMPANY - UAS Laboratories

coconut oil is below

Virgin oil de Coco-Creme

Lissette,

At long last, she's finally been diagnosed. Follow their advice....they are the Specialists.

At least the treatment is there for her.

Follow your vet's advice. And when all is said and done, both you and he will be responsible for her treatment and care.

I checked and i don't think the generic for sporanox oral solution "Itraconazole" is available. ask the vet if this can be treated by Nystatin solution; that could save you money. best of luck
however, just an FYI the generic is the chemical equivalent of the brand name drug; there's no difference; that's why it has to be approved by the NDA and FDA
it's just cheaper because there's no patent on it and it's made and repackaged by several pharma companies; unlike the brand name which is owned and manufactured by only one pharma company.

Thanks so much, I will have her off the Predisone by friday. Funny you talk about Coconut, I use Spring Valley extra virgin coconut oil I buy at Whole Foods, I rub it on my face, hair, body. You can even cook with it. I also drink Coconut milk instead of Cow. So it makes sence to supplement for my dogs. She is on a very very strong drug. Guess where I think she got this fungus? From bags of soil. I love fresh veges. I was in the vets and a lady told me her friends dog got this fungus from MULCH.....Just giving everyone a heads up...
