| Liver Shunt ? I have a new yorkie puppy that I love with all my heart. Yesterday she got sick..wabbly, lethargic...thought it was hypoglycemia...gave karo syrup, nothing changed, went to vet. Liver enzymes high, BAT post 68. My vet thinks she has liver shunt. I am devasted. All the research I have done looks so expensive. I live in South Carolina. Does anyone have any help?? My vet has placed her on Hills LD canned food, Bactrim and Denamarin. Thanks and and advice will be greatly appreciated. Before yesterday no problems. She has a great appetite, energy, no head rubbing, no diarrhea, normal bowel movements, she has gained 5 ounces in 2 weeks. Yesterday her weight was 1.9 pounds. She did receive her second round of shots 2 weeks ago. |

| Terry, the next step would be a Protein C test. Comparative Coagulation -- NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center I'd suggest you start your own thread. You'll get more replies. |

| The surgery at UT is $1800-$2200. I would recommend a scintigraphy but they're pretty pricey. In CA they cost $495. A lot of people tell me that protein C tests aren't very reliable.

| Who besides one YT member with no medical background told you that? It is part of the current protocol recommended by Dr. Center, one of the leading experts on liver disease in the country. |

| i have to say i do not think they are accurate and i would not spend money on it myself as i helped a dog on here who had a protein c test done and it came up negative for shunt and the dog had 4 shunts when tobias opened him up after i referred him to tobias and she could not repair him - the protein c test was sent by a well respected ims (who dr dodds has a lot of respect for as i asked if she knew this person)to texas a & m so not sure if that was the problem as it was not sent to cornell like the dog owner requested I would save my money and go straight to scintigraphy if it were my dog after that as scintigraphy is much more indicative of the shunt and if protein c test comes up positive anyway they will send the dog for scintigraphy anyway and after seeing this happen with this dog i strongly question the protein c test now Last edited by dwerten; 04-08-2010 at 09:27 AM. |

I think there is controversy as well as i think and correct me if i am wrong centers is not too quick on doing shunt repair in all dogs and in some feels they can be treated without the repair is this the case as I believe a vet tech told me this but want to be sure as i personally if my dog had a shunt would get it repaired so they can have a normal life -- I am just curious if anyone else has heard this as well? | Are you saying that one test that possibly was inaccurate is a reason to suggest the test is never accurate and should not be done?? I don't think there is a laboratory test that has not come back inaccurate at some point; but people still need to have them done. A diagnosis is made based on many diagnostic tests along with a physical exam.

| Just curious since you stated the test is inaccurate.

| yeah i just do not trust that test as much as the scintigraphy now and it has not been around that long that i am aware of and if a dog is going to go to surgery i would want the most accurate test for that and scintigraphy is the best for determine shunts even over ultrasound as well. I have seen also a dog on here that scintigraphy was positive for shunt and the dog did not have a shunt and tobias did the surgery and spay and i believe she did the scintigraphy but i do think that test is more accurate as they send a dye capsule through to see if it bypasses the liver so you are correct not all tests are 100% accurate as there are so many variables all we can do is try to invest our money in the ones we feel are going to give us the most answers. |
