Found lumps in my Yorkie's throat Greetings. I hate to enter a forum with a topic such as this but I must. Last night we noticed two lumps, one on either side of our 7 year old's (named Skittles) throat. I assume they are swollen lymph nodes and I am dearly hoping this is nothing more serious than an infection. He has been eating and drinking fine, barking, basically acting like his normal self but I am concerned about this. Thinking it might me lymphoma I found the locations on the other lymph nodes and I don't believe any of them are swollen. The only location I am concerned about is the groin since I am not sure exactly where to feel. But I found nothing on the chest (including under the shoulders) and nothing on the hind legs, which I take as a potentially encouraging sign. I have noticed no unusual coughing (he has a slight heart problem which can cause occasional coughing), he's not vomiting, his stools seem normal. The only other symptom was, we noticed this weekend while out of town he would make kind of a snorting sound on some breaths. We assumed he probably had allergies or maybe even a "cold" or whatever similar minor respiratory infection a dog might get. We have an appointment with the vet in the morning, but I can't rest on this until then. Does anyone have any other suggestions for things to look for?

Don't drive yourself crazy trying to guess. Your guessing just may scare you to death for no reason. Good luck with your vet visit. Hope it all works out fine. Swollen glands can be caused by several different things. Sore throat, infection, tonsillitis etc. Hope tomorrow comes fast for you so you can get your answer.

My girl Stormy (RIP) had swollen lymph nodes before for about two days and they went away on their own before I could bring it to my vets attention. I hope your baby has nothing serious. I too drive myself crazy searching for a cause.

Yes, I had a dog who got what the vet called tonsillitis every spring and fall. She always was put on antibiotics and it cleared right up but there are some other more serious possibilities so I would schedule a vet visit

I gave him a bath tonight and tried to do a thorough check, and still I can only feel the two lumps. He also seemed like he might have a little congestion.

Try not to panic. My Lady had swollen lymph nodes years ago and my vet did a needle aspiration. I had to wait two days for the results and I was a wreck. It turned out to be nothing. My vet suspected it was just her immune system reacting to her allergies. Update us after your appointment, okay?

My heightened concern probably comes from working for a cancer hospital. Seems to make it easier to see the possibility of cancer in things. | |

I will say a prayer for you and your Skittles. It probably is something very benign! Will look forward to seeing an update. Welcome to YT!

YT Addict | I'm glad I saw this thread too. My husband felt a lump in Derby's throat area/under his chin 2 days ago. He gets neutered next week, so we figured we'd wait until then to see what happens. He is acting totally fine, and nothing seems wrong at all- so we figured we would monitor it. It is cold season after all! Let me know what the vet says. |

Well, no obvious illness, and all of his other lymph nodes are swollen (I guess I wasn't feeling the right spots or they are not as close to the skin as I thought). They took aspirate from some of the nodes for testing. Something tells me this will be lymphoma. We hope to have the full results tomorrow. On the assumption that that is what it will turn out to be, my wife and I have to figure out how we are going to handle this (chemo vs. supportive therapy), and what we are going to tell our girls (aged 6 and almost 4). Either way, it will be hard to hide taking him to the vet every week. Tomorrow (the 4th) is Skittles' 7th birthday.

As I said last night, try not to panic. I went through the same thing with Lady when she was eight. All her lymph nodes were swollen and they did a needle aspirate, too. She was fine.

Our youngest daughter has cystic fibrosis...so we have been through the whole having to wait and find out if it is bad news before (actually many times, and sometimes it was bad news and sometimes it was not bad news) so, yeah, I understand the need to wait and do so calmly. I just don't want to not prepare myself for the bad news.

Don't jump the gun and make yourself crazy. Sending prayer's for your baby that all will be fine. I know it's easy to say, especailly coming from me. I panic over anything, always thinking the worst. It's not worth it, because each time it turns out to be nothing and I became stressed for nothing. Will watch for an update. Good luck to you and your baby,
