| Sweet Sophie has heartworms! We went to the Doc today for a well 'woman' visit & shots. The girls loved her! As they usually do, she was tested for heartworm & other stuff.....well she came back positive. My Sweet Sophie has adult heartworms! She's ONLY 16 months old!!! We talked about the treatment & that will be done next week. What I NEED is info from someone who has been through this with one of their babies. What can I expect & what can I do to make it as easy as possible for her? |

| Is Sophie crate trained? She will have to be confined for about a month after her treatment as the dead heartworms can clog her heart and lungs. This also means no walks or playing as any movement can cause the dead heartworms to move. Here is an idea what to expect: Heartworm Treatment Recovery - LoveToKnow Dogs |

| Did you just get het? Has she been on heartworm meds? Did the vet talk to you about the slow-kill method?

| If she was on heartworm preventatives, the company will pay for her treatment. If she was not, I strongly suggest you put both girls on one. As for the treatment, the recommendation now is for them to take Heartgard for 2-4 months. This will kill the microfilaria (babies). My vet gives them Doxycycline for a month prior to treatment. That is given to kill a parasite that lives in the heartworms. It supposedly makes the treatment easier on them. The best way to treat imo is in two treatments and they are a month apart. I am sure that is what your vet will recommend. It is a slower kill and much easier on them. Here are a couple of links that have a lot of information about heartworms and treatments: Heartworm Treatment - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! American Heartworm Society | Canine Heartworm Her activity level must be kept to a bare minumum. I am sure your vet will explain that. Many people use strict crate rest. I only do that with a super hyper pup. If they are relatively quiet, I allow them to be out of the crate when I am at home. While out, I take no chances and crate them. Good luck and let us know how little Sophie is doing!

| Lady Jane thanks for the articles they were VERY informative. So 2-4 mo of heartgard THEN a month of doxycycline THEN the treatment? Do I need to keep her quite now and during the pretreatment? The Doc did more bloodwork before we left yesterday to test liver function etc & I have to take a fecal sample today. I don't know how we are going to keep her quiet for a month...she's a bouncy puppy...ok she's 16 months old but she bounces around like a puppy. I was reading thru the risk classes and my guess is that she is a level 1...& I'm praying I'm right. I feel so guilty about not taking her to the Doc sooner....so so guilty. | They sure can fool us. She did not look like she was feeling poorly Sunday. Keep us posted. Kids are due for their monthly heartgard. Ladyjane thanks for the info "If she was on heartworm preventatives, the company will pay for her treatment."

| From reading the info that LJ sent me...the only thing we can see that is any indication of HW is that when she's out on walks she tires before Keegan who is 8 y/o. Lord...she's going to be even more of a brat after this is over. |

I forgot...she is a puppy...yep, it will be a challenge to keep her still but you really do need to. She will adjust. I have a foster right now who is a bit of a wild child. He had a bone graft and a pin and plate put in his leg so he has to be kept quiet for two months. At first he was anxious, but he has gotten used to it. I just take him out a lot and have crates in different rooms so he is able to see everything going on. I doubt she is a heavy positive given her age. Your vet will stage it and then suggest the treatment. They usually also do a chest xray on them. You need to get past the guilt and simply take it from today. Nothing you can do about the past. You are doing your best for her and have learned from this experience. It is also good to share with others so that they also will learn from it. Many, many people do not really "get" the risk of heartworms. I don't know why, but it is common. Not sure if the vets are not doing a good enough job of educating or what.
