| I was giving her heartworm med but from the info that I've been reading she definately had them before I got her...she, most likely, was infected when she was taken from the breeder. Like LadyJane says...hindsight is 20/20. So I can only go forward & get her the best treatment & take care of her. |

Your absolutely right. Thank heavens she had a vet visit when she did. I know it's extremely dangerous to give a dog heatworm meds if the dog already has them. Sending prayer's for your baby and wishing for a complete recovery.

| Actually it is not dangerous to give Heartgard to a heartworm positive dog. That is now the recommended first part of heartworm treatment! But, that is the only preventative that is recommended!!

It was my understanding that vet's give the yearly heartworm test before writting a new prescription for the new year to be sure the dog tested negative to heartworm. At least my vet does this. Giving the meds to a postivie dog could be dangerous I was told. Thanks for the new information. Gee it's hard to keep up.

I think the reason the vets do this is because they want people to test their dogs yearly. If you read the links I posted above, you will see that they do use Heartgard in the beginning of treatment in most cases now.

| I just got the info from Sophie's blood tests. Everything came out fine EXCEPT her liver function. He is suspecting a liver shunt.....but I'm not going to freak out until something is more firm. Let's pray that it is not! Tomorrow at 9am she has an appt for an elevated bile series test. She'll go in fasting, have blood work done, eat, wait 2 hours then another blood test. They'll also do xrays to see her heart & lungs etc. He wants to address the liver issue before the heartworms. Y'all seems my little girl is very sick & she could use some prayers. |

Did you get a health guarantee from her breeder? I certainly hope so. You've got some big vet bills a head of you.

| Sophie is a rescue...so no health guarantee. I was gone last weekend so my husband took the call from the vet, then we went & did some research on liver shunts. He just called me fom work & said that she doesn't have the symptoms of liver shunt. The only thing she does is rub her ears on the floor from time to time & sometimes she'll shake when we think she shouldn't. I'm going to go to the vet & get a copy of her blood work to check her BUN, altumin, ALT etc...things that could indicate LS. |

Tyy not to panic. If she has no symptoms she may just have MVD which is easily controlled with diet and supplements.
