ENVIRONMENTAL DECONTAMINATION
The most readily available effective disinfectant is probably bleach diluted 1:32 in water which required less than one minute of contact to kill Giardia cysts in one study. Organic matter such as dirt or stool is protective to the cyst so on a concrete surface basic cleaning should be effected prior to disinfection. Animals should be thoroughly bathed before being reintroduced into a “clean” area.

Ok I think I understand what you are saying. Bleach kills the parasite, but it's important to get rid of dirt first, as dirt can "protect" the parasite from the bleach. Vinegar can be used to actually clean surfaces and then a disinfectant such as bleach can be used.

My dog had giardia and I bought him from an excellent breeder who lived on a farm. Vet treated him with high dose of metro....(whatever) once daily for 7 days. His stool improved by the third day. I washed all his bedding and everything he touched with chlorox and hot water and detergent. He'll go back to the vet for a recheck. He's only 9 weeks now. His appetite is great now. The breeder was concerned-her farm was very clean, but I was told by authorities that the giardia could come from the water in this rural area. I'll continue to listen to my vet, but vet has told me these things occur in many puppies. Vet wanted to treat with high daily dose to deal with it quickly. Hope this helps. Also told me to pick up all poop to avoid reinfection.
