| Liver Shunt/MVD Help please! I have a puppy that is 1.4lb at 6 months. We tried vet #3 today and he was supposed to call me back tonight about whether or not my puppy has liver shunt and I have heard nothing and tried calling him but after hours nurse said I cannot call him at home. So fellow Yorkie lovers I need some help please!! I am really begging for everything that you have in knowledge of these two things, MVD and liver shunt. He said he is almost positive it is that but he is getting her bile acids reports from the vet who ran them last. Maddie's symptoms consist of: vomiting, no weight gain, no appetite, hypoglycemia, low iron, constipation and bloat, little poops or squishy green ones, one seizure, hair loss, belly is tight as it can be with something bulging from her sides, sleeps all the time, whines when picked up, acts like she is gagging throw her head back and forth like a chicken and making weird noise then hangs her head way back or downward in a grazing position often whenever she does this most of the time throws up when she does this. I have probably missed some but the vet has my list. I am sorry this is so long I have posted so many threads on here whenever she has a different symptom pop up and I cannot take this him not calling me tonight like he said its really stressing me out! If It is liver shunt I have been calling different places in Virginia where we live and only Virginia Tech and a place in Fairfax do the surgery so far that I have been able to contact at 7pm at night. And the place in Fairfax wants $3000 to do it. I am really hoping its not shunt but everything fits together even though the vet #2 said it was not and vet #3 thinks it is. If anyone knows somewhere that does a good job at fixing liver shunt that is within a $2000 or less price range within 4 hours driving distance to Wytheville Va I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!!! |

| My Lola had a liver shunt and was operated on in March of this year. She is doing wonderful now. I know how you are feeling right now - it is overwhelming. First thing you need to do is register on - Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support they can answer all of your questions and give you the best advice anywhere. They helped save my baby's life. Have you started her on Hills LD or Royal Canine Hepatic 14? They are both prescription foods she will need to be on and also immediately started on Lactulose, a prescription medication to be given with her food 3-4 times a day to help rid her of the toxins buillt up in her body that are causing the symptoms you are talking about. You can get all of this from your vet very first thing in the morning. I'm no expert, but the people I told you about above are. Sign on, ask all of your questions (be persistant) and follow their advice! Good luck - it will get better! ~~~ Valerie Last edited by Lolasmom1211; 09-17-2009 at 04:49 PM. |

| The best place to go would be University of Tennessee, Knoxville. they have the best record and are the cheapest. I'm sorry about your pup. What food are you feeding. Don't give any red meat or organ meat until you talk to the vet.

| Sorry about your furbaby. My friends dog Lexie had a liver shunt/surgery at the vet med school at Iowa State University. She is getting along great and quickly rebounded. Hoping you both get some rest and answers.

| Update He called last night and by the other vets tests he is leaning away from a shunt and mvd *yea!* But now we are back to square one because we do not know what is going on with her. She doesn't eat and her poor little tummy area sticks out as much as it can. He wants to run blood panels and his own bile acid tests himself though and probaly more. So hopefully they can take her in today and get it started. He said by everything on the other vets records he is surprised that she is still alive. Lets cross our fingers he can see her today and find out what is wrong, thank you guys! |
