| Help! Yorkie Fracture knee "NEW MEMBER" I am very sad and depressed my puppy Hannah only 6 mths is going thru the worst pain ever.Unfortunately my daughter accidently stepped on her hind legs as they were both walking. She was crying at first not being able to move then follow by yelping. We picked her up checking her legs finding out to have her left leg swollen.Thinking that it was just a sprain nothing seemed to change she would just stay laying down in the same position. Next moring we decided to take her to the vet for a check up. Very bad news, my baby will need a surgery A.S.A.P.The vet told me that this type of surgery is very critical and he would not guarentee me that she will heal perfectly if done by him. He also mentioned that she might even develop athritis in the future if she's not lucky. So he would prefer for me to find a vet that specialist on orthopidic surgery. At this moment I am still calling to all vets in my city its been 2 days and my baby is still in pain laying down she wont even get up to do the restroom. Here's a pic of the x-ray to see for yourself how bad is the fracture. Has anyone experience this kind of fracture to your love one "which I hope not" and how much would it cost me or even an average amount just to fix my baby. Any input will be appreciated. If pic did not load up I will keep trying. |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I just wanted to say welcome to YT - and I'm sorry this happened to your baby. I don't have any experience with this, but hopefully, someone who does will post.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry about your baby. Could your vet give you something to ease the pain until you get the surgery? He should have been able to give you names of surgeons who could do this. I would think the sooner it is done the better chance of a complete healing. I don't know how far Texas A&M university is but they have a great reputation as vets. Please keep us posted.

| Reply Please find a VET who has compassion and get things done. Don't know how he can let a little thing be pain , without giving any pain meds. Do the research and find a Board certified Vet Ortho Surgeon. Paul W. Jenson, DVM, MS , Diplomate ACVS, Large Animal Surgery 2005 Address: 5708 Vista Linda El Paso, Texas 79932 USAOffice Telephone: (915) 525-3169 Office Fax: (915) 581-0241 E-mail: drjenson@gmail.com Also, it is bad that it has been 2 days that the poor dog has broken the knee. I went thru this wiith my yorkie with his surgery. They are stoic to pain but it bothers them. I would think the cost varies between places. I would say around $ 1500. I will pray for your Yorkie, hope all will be well. Just a word of caution, after surgery the first week is bad but it all gets better. There is nothing precious than seeing kids and dogs happily running after us. |

| Broke his elbow My son lost his balance as I was making the bed and fell off. It was 6:30 a.m. and my vet didn't open til 8. I held him the whole time. We got to the vet and they thought maybe it was dislocated so they sent us to a veterinary hospital in Charleston that has different specialties and digital x-ray. (My Dixiana had her liver shunt surgery there 2 years ago) Before we left my vet made all of the arrangements and also gave him a shot for the pain as it was almost a 2 hour drive. They found he had broken his elbow. The Dr. said it would heal on it's own but he would not have normal function unless he had surgery. He had the surgery and now has a tiny rod and screw in his elbow and he is doing wonderfully running and playing as though it never happened. The cost was 2152.00 but worth it. |

| I would like to thank all of you for your response. I would like to say that the first visit to the vet had prescribed some painkillers for Hannah. It's Friday morning 8:00 am and we finally found a vet that specialist in orthopedics with good experience. The vet took at look at the x-ray that was giving to me from the first vet and examined Hannah. He gave me a good explanation about the how the surgery would be performed. Amount for this surgery $1,475.00 first the Dr. would have to position the bone back to its original place then insert 2 thin rods "X" crossing the bone starting from the broken one to the other side of the good bone holding it in place "pic image". Finally he would form a pamper shape cast having the left side longer to hold her leg. Healing would take 6 wks with cast on and prevent her from trying to walk. The reason for this is because if her bone grows back off course then she can develop arthritis but if all goes well then she will heal perfectly normal. Her early age makes a difference when it come to a fracture bone. My baby was injected with an anitibiotic and was taken to the operation room. Was hard to see her go but I know it was for her own good. Thank you all I will keep you posted. Please pray for her. |

| Good Luck I am happy to hear that you guys took him to VEt Surg. Great, Please realize that the first week will be very stressful for him and you until you both get used to it. Once he gets hang of it, they are the best. We all will pray for a speedy recovery and I am sure all will be well. god Bless |

| You'll will be so glad you went ahead with the surgery. At his age he should make a full recovery. We went through this with our Gracie when she was 4 months old. We put Gracie in a playpen when we we unable to completely supervise her because you need to limit them from walking or jumping after the surgery. It's amazing how hard it is to keep a puppy from doing all of those things they are not supposed to do. Gracie adapted to her cast very quickly. Be sure to cover the cast when he goes outside so it doesn't get wet. Our surgeon gave us one but if they don't you can make one yourself. Wishing you and your pup well and be sure to keep us updated.
