| Itchy Baby!!! I have a 4 month old baby and she has itched since we got her 2 months ago..Her vet suggested adding fish oil to her food~did that~!! We are in the process of switching her to Iams puppy food which her groomer suggested and we use Tropicare Puppy shampoo to bath her at home...Still no change~any suggestions would be greatly appreciated???!!!

| Oh that poor baby! Welcome to YT! Does she have itty bitty black dots on her tummy? That would be fleas. But the vet would have caught that. Plain ol dry skin? I used to wash my Buddy in a oatmeal shampoo. He would get dry skin in the winter just like me!LOL Just found the bottle it's, Top Paw - Natural Oatmeal Shampoo Hope you find the cause, so she can fell better! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If she was itching quite badly at only 8 weeks old, I don't think it would be allergies bc her Mama's antibodies should still be protecting her. Usualllllly, allergies aren't seen (esp enviro) until they're a year and up. What does the skin look like? Where is she itching? Esp. since she is a puppy, I'd really rule out mites, amongst other things... And WELCOME to YT too!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Welcome! FYI, Iams is not the greatest food. You might want to consider something else. There is a sticky thread at the top of the "Health" forum that covers a lot of different brands.

| My 5 month is the same way. She has been itchy on her back for about 3-4 weeks. I took her to the vet and they put her on a skin soothing shampoo and leave in conditioner that is DIGUSTING. Its her coat dull and sticky. They checked her skin and it doesn't even look dry and flaky. The vet stated that at this stage there are a lot of hormonal changes that could be causing the its. My Yorkies eat Evo - chicken.

| I have the same problem! My 11 week old puppy itches by his ears and on his back. The vet checked his ears and ruled out infection or mites, but he does itch a great deal behind his ears. I also check daily for fleas and I never see any. I switched him to Natural Balance food, which is supposed to be better than the Royal Canin he was eating. He doesn't appear to have dry skin because i never see any flakes or anything. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what to do? Is there a vitamin or supplement of some sort that can help this? My vet is convinced it is the little hairs inside his ear that need to be plucked so maybe that could be it?? I hate to see him itch..

| Itchy Baby!! I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome to YT!!! This is our first Yorkie and "oh boy" what a delightful experience...What we didn't realize was she is very high maintenance!!!! Diva Doggie!!!! Also, thanks to all for the suggestions~we greatly appreciate them, as this is quite a learning experience...We went out yesterday and got her Natural Balance small bites food...Also, got BioGroom Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner ( I didn't realize dogs used conditioner~LOL!!!) She has been on Frontline Plus and I check skin daily!!! She mainly itches around her ears-she had an ear infection the first time I took to the vet so she had to be on med for that!!! Since then I clean her ears frequently!!! Her skin looks fine but I have noticed a bit of dander!!! The breeder that we got her from told us she bathed her with DAWN dish liquid~OMG!!!! The other thing that I am concerned with is that she hacks and coughs often...We have her on Childrens Benedryl which her vet suggested!!! But I don't like giving that too her all the time!!! She doesn't care for it either!!!

| Just to let you know I took my boy to the groomers yesterday and they plucked the little hairs in his ear and cleaned his ears really well...and his itching behind his ears has improved so much! I haven't seen him itch at all! You might want to try this if you still have a problem with ear itching after his infection is gone. Apparently it is a common issue with yorkies! Who knew? But it would be good to continue to clean his ears even if you don't want to get the hairs removed.. you would be surprised by how much wax will build up in a small amount of time! One other thing.. I know it seems crazy that your breeder bathed your dog in Dawn dish soap, but this is actually very common. It works well for cleaning, its gentle [it's used to clean ducks, seals, and other wildlife affected by oil spills], and can help if your pup has fleas or itching at an age too young for preventative medication. My breeder used Dawn as well!

| Our vet plucked her hairs on her first visit~which hurt me more than her~he told me that this is part of their hygiene??? I had no idea!! Her ear infection is gone now but she still has the itching!!! I got ear cleaner from the vet and he showed me how to clean her ears at home~We do that weekly~and your right~it's pretty gross what comes out of those cute little ears!!! Also, thanks for the info on the Dawn dish liquid~I figured that may have stripped the oils in her skin and coat!!!
