| My lil GUCCI is sick, I need your thoughts.. Pancreatitis, Food Change etc? Hi all so Gucci was sick yesterday (we have been in contact with our vet so no worries there) At around 1pm & 1:15 he threw up some bile (yellow) , he does this sometimes so I wasn't too concerned as he usually does it when he hasn't eaten. He also went to the bathroom at this time and it was greenish and slightly less solid than usual. Well around 7:30 pm he threw up again this time it had about 5 tiny blobs of fresh blood in it (now I am starting to worry) He was still acting normal and will eat and drink. I give him some cottage cheese to ease his stomach and he gulps it down since he hadn't eaten all day. He then regurgitates it (NOT VOMITING) he was barking and some just fell out of his mouth with no effort at all, then he was playing and more fell out undigested with mucous from the esophagus. At this time he was acting like he isn't feeling well and just wants to cuddle, around 10 p.m he goes poo and it's not quite diarreah but softer than usual with some smushy liquid and dark brown with some blood tinged mucous in it. By then he was back to acting normal again and still drinking but I began witholding food after the cottage cheese regurgitation. So now today he wakes up and is back to his normal self. The vet wants him on a bland diet until the end of the week just rice, cottage cheese and chicken and he is only eating 2 tbs every 4 hours. He is holding it all down etc. We are just concerned about the bit of blood in the vomit... He also felt warm to touch and now feels normal temp. Could it have been a case of slight pancreatitis or the food change? (we had to change his food because the only store that sells Innova puppy in town ran out so I bought Innova adult the day before he got sick) I am baffled and now I have set an appointment for bloodwork with the vet this week. I just don't understand this.. could he really just be that sensitive? He vomited chicken jerky when I gave him that and he cannot eat anything but plain yogurt, apples, cottage cheese, rice, chicken and dog food as well as yogurt drops and had no problems with yorkie yummies or chicken crisps. Any ideas on what this could have been? the vet says it could have been the food change, but like me she is concerned about the blood in the vomit. However, she also said if he's better today then he doesn't need to be seen... but I can bring him in for testing this week if I want (and I do) What do I ask for etc.? All Advice is appreciated Last edited by annamalyssa; 08-15-2009 at 06:51 PM. |

ask your vet if they have in house spec cpli test bc if they do not it takes 3-4 days to get back as that is the true test for pancreatitis. If that vet does not i would find one that does have the inhouse to get immediate results. If he is still sick I would get blood work done but sounds like upset from food change. I would do a very bland chicken and white rice diet in small amounts and if he vomits i would stop food for 12 hrs and only allow water. They can go 5-7 days with no food no prob it is water that they need. | |

| DWERTEN - I did switch the food ALL AT ONCE, I know you are not supposed to and you are supposed to do it as a mix in over a few days but the store (the only one that sells Innova in town) ran out of the Innova puppy and only had adult. The Adult is lower in fat and protein so I think maybe it was the food change as well. I just wasn't sure that a food change could make him so sick. The blood is what scared me, but he was dry heaving a lot with the first two episodes and actually did have one smaller episode right before the blood one. So maybe he did strain to hard. I was just so worried when I saw the blood. I will definately ask the vet for the test and make sure it's IN HOUSE.. I like things quickly as well. He is doing great now and holding down the rice and chicken well. He has not vomited and is growling for my attention again (He's X-penned right now so he'll rest) and he is barking and talking to us again. Yesterday he was quieter than usual . It's crazy how sensitive these lil guys can be.. I would never have imagined it. Thank you so much for taking the time to offer me some help!! I am just lost as I had no idea what could have caused this. MyPreciousPups and KimberlySRN thank you both for the well wished!!! Quote:

| The Innova Puppy is 28 Protein and 16 Fat and the Innova Adult I believe is 24 and 14 it that helps .. I switched from Puppy directly to adult but he was running the house the day before as well and sadly could have gotten something. |

| well if you think he got into something then have him xrayed as well as blood work but most likely food. If new food lower in fat than previous it could have been from too quick change over. Usually that is diarrhea but could be vomitting i guess. Just stick to chicken and rice as to not confuse things for now. Let his tummy rest and slowly introduce food and to ease into food soak kibble as it is easier to digest than hard kibble |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | Awww poor Gucci....I sure hope he feels better today. Mine all are very sensitive to change of any kind of food. Because of that they pretty much have the same food and treats all the time. Sending Gucci 7 yorkie kisses to get well. |

| Hi Guys, Just a quick update as I won't be on much of today ... gotta take care of my G-man. He ate and played fine all day yesterday, this morning he woke up and vomited a bit of blood specs that are fresh as they are bright red. UGGGHHHH what is this? Our vet isn't open today and if he goes downhill he will be in the ER but for now he is acting normal and playing and eating fine etc. So I am going to watch him for today and we have an appointment already set for tomorrow at our vet. I suppose she will examine him then and tell me what she thinks we need to do next. I suppose a parasite could always be the cause. He hasn't been dewormed the entire time I have had him!! Everytime we go to the vet his Fecal is CLEAR and he doesn't need it. However, we haven't been there for a while so maybe now he's gotten some worms? |
